Hey guys I'm new to the forum which I have been lurking for sometime now. I can't search therefore I hope you don't mind this new thread. I'm itching to get a new knife. I can't decide which knife is suited for me. I will be doing mostly camping and general bushcraft and other general tasks. I like the look, size and sheath of the RC-5 But realize that it is probably too much for what I need (weight and thickness, though I Really want one). I've been leaning towards the RC-4 which I gather is a good size and excellent performer but I'm curious where does the RC-6 fall into play? I have a Ka-bar and like the size of it but maybe it's over kill for what I'm doing. Thanks in advance for all the help.

I'd say go for the RC-4., IMO it'd make the better bushcrafter. The RC-5 is certainly a beast but it's probably a little thick for lighter duty camp chores. The RC-6 on the other hand might be the way to go if you do alot of chopping and batoning but I'd prefer to leave that to an axe or hatchet.

Welcome! I gotta warn ya...If you gt an RC4 you'll wind up so attached you'll never take the thing off.

Seriously though the RC4 is a fntastic blade for all the stuff one usualy does outdoors' plus it is one tough little knife to boot. Mine has become my EDC blade.

Hello and welcome to the RAT pack.

I agree with you that the RC-5 is a bit much for a general bushwacking knife, it's a big, thick, bruser of a blade.

The RC-4 is just about perfect for what you describe, I carry mine regularly in the woods and out.

But just to make your decision a bit tougher, the RC-6 isn't the beast it appears to be in pictures. It's the same thickness as the RC-4 with a full flat grind and a wider blade, giving it a great edge geometry and making it a fantastic slicer.

If you like a bit longer of a blade and a bigger, more shapely handle, don't count the RC-6 out.:D

Ze RC4 iz ze way to go. Zis iz nicht stier scheisse!

Herr Großer Penis hat gesprochen!!

Really, it doesn't matter which you get, because you'll soon realize that you NEED one of each... and maybe even a few doubles like me and some of the other sickos here... Hey TTD, I'm lookin your way Brother ;) :D

Thanks for the input guys! I'm really leaning towards the RC-4. If the 4 is considered a good general camp knife what would the 6 be considered?

They are all good, but the RC 4 is imo the best all around bushcrafter.

PS. You will get them all once you get one, so might as well just pic one and get it :D

Hahah! I'll probably get a RC-5 when money permits, I really don't like the coyote sheath of the 6. Thanks alot guys I'll get a RC-4 and let you guys know how it stands up to Saipan camping duties.

I purchased the RC6 first due to concerns the handle of the RC4 may be too small.

The RC6 is a larger knife well suited to survival and bush work. It is not as easy to carry as the RC4 due to the more compact size and excellent sheath system that comes with the RC4. The RC6 however is a fantastic knife.

I'll be ordering an RC-6 soon, and am also hoping a truly "big" blade is in the future for RAT to replace my RTAKII.

Welcome to the forum!

Jeff has said that a large chopper, or "overpriced machete" is in the pipeline, but it's a ways down the road.

Your not the only one looking forward to it.;)

You know, the best bet is to get the RC-3/RC-6 combo. RC-3 is awesome on its own for day hikes. The RC-6 can be used as the more robust survival knife (one does it all thing), and you'll love the combo of them at base camp!
