Hello all!

TL:DR - Looking for a slip joint with modern aesthetics/materials. Titanium scales, nice blade steel.

So, my knife history goes back to 2010 when I fell in love with "tactical" folders. I quickly got into the hobby hard and spent another 8 years trying as many knives as I could from Striders, Hinderers, CRK's, Direware, customs, midtechs, etc... I loved them, but only thing I couldn't really get used to was carrying them.

I always leave my back pockets empty, I hate sitting on anything in my back pockets and I don't want to have to take stuff out of my pockets to sit down comfortably. As such, my front pockets are always set up the same.
Front left = wallet, keys
front right = phone, knife clipped to pocket

Having a large knife clipped to the same pocket as my large phone has always created a problem, but I just lived with it...Until I recently remembered slip joints that you can just drop in your pocket. I recently sold off my last "tactical" folder because, outside of fiddling with it, I didn't like carrying it.

So here is my request. I really want a slip joint knife now, but I really love the look/feel of modern folders. I am looking for something with titanium scales preferably. I really don't like the wood/bone scales or the look of more "traditional" slip joints. This knife would take the place of something like a small Sebenza 21.

Knives that I have been looking at and can probably explain the aesthetics I like more than words are thing like the J.E. Made knives, Serge Knife Co. Slip joint in titanium. My knowledge of brands/models is pretty much limited to those 2 that I pointed out. Does anyone have any other suggestions on knives I should look into?

Thank you!

I like my JE Made Lanny but had to modify it to open easily. I'm not familiar with Serge. Lionsteel, Two sun, Real Steel, and WE knives make titanium handled slippies. Isham makes a nice looking slippie but it's small. Then there 's the CRK Impinda for $$

Rough Ryder has a medium stockman with VG10 blades and two tone aluminum covers.
Also a small/medium trapper in the same series.

If you like G10 and D2, check marbles new D2 series. I think there are five patterns in it. I have the D2 Sowbelly stockman. It's seen a bit of EDC duty..

I agree lionsteel has some offerings you may like. As well as some of the Pena production models. JE made that you’ve already seen. They are becoming more and more common. And popular.

You should check out forum supporting dealer CollectorKnives.net for their great Lionsteel knives, many choices all very nice.
I second this suggestion. Nice knives. Titanium and M390, made in Italy, well put together, very reasonable price. There's a ZT folder (maybe two but I think one at least was discontinued) that are similar to slip joints but using detents instead of a backspring as well. I think they're the 0230 and 0235.

another to consider is a Civivi Gent.

Lock back, one hand opening if you want. Looks like a modern /traditional.

D2 steel, or option of damascus.

Others have ready mentioned lion steel.

There are many cusrom makers as well, depending on budget, you should be able to find a wide variety!

I'm a multi knife carry nut. I typically have at least two or 4 traditional knives and modern folder/fixed blade on me.

I don't sit on wallets. I don't notice a modern clipped folder in the back pocket too much. I have the added restriction, that when I'm out and about, I have a few spare magazines for my gun in the left front pocket.

I do not cary anything in the same pocket as my phone, so it is typically in left breast pocket on a button down shirt.

I third this suggestion. All knives made in Italy are nicely made these days. Collector Knives has the best selection of Italian knives of all the BladeForums dealer supporters. I have bought 18 traditional knives from Mr. Mike Latham in the past since 2018. It is fun to look at every knife on his web-sight and I still do. You will see something that you will like ! "WARNING" You will contract "BLADE ADDICTION SICKNESS" ! I am always looking for another nice knife to add to my collection.

Definitely check out LionSteel's offerings. Collector Knives is probably the easiest place to do that. There are some slip joints that are crossovers between modern and traditional knives that you might want to take a look at. Personally I don't care for metal scales on most knives. So, the Lionsteel Thrill has little appeal. But you seem to prefer this look. Enjoy!

Many thanks for the mentions. Here are some of the variations from the recent "Slim" release (Ti, Blue Ano Ti, and Copper frames); and the standard silver carbon fiber model at the bottom. Four of many variations; and the clip Shuffler has a new shipment in transit....

Thank you for calling them slipjoints.

I laugh... because I was thinking the same thing. :D
The term "slippie" should be banned from the entire English language. ;)
YMMV

I was actually thinking of the lamentable trend of using the term "traditional" as a synonym for slipjoints or spring knives. I was chuffed to come upon a newbie's thread that wasn't titled, New to Traditionals, Need Some Guidance.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I have been looking at all the models recommended.

I have been now looking on your site on and off since last night haha. That copper one looks amazing, I love that blade shape and the idea of the copper getting a some patina on it.

Haha thank you! I did some research and looked up the differences before posting to try and get a little more detailed. Probably easier for people to help me if I help myself some.

About as modern as it comes, CRK Impinda

I was looking at these too! Its on my list of potential candidates.

Question for you guys. I had a buddy who years ago, had a Jim Dunlap carbon fiber slip joint. It felt really nice but I have no idea on the quality. Here is what I am talking about: https://www.knifeology.com/product-page/jim-dunlap-gentleman-s-folders (also, if anyone knows if that website is a good one to order from, they are the only ones I could find with those in-stock).

I think I am going to order one of those Lionsteel's from Collectorknives and also a another one. I don't know why I thought I would buy less getting into these slip joints :D
