Hey guys and gals,

I'm new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Brent and I live in the great state of Alabama. I camp, hunt, hike and shoot as much as I can. I've had the tan RC-4 for about 4 months or so and I have used it a good bit in the woods. I love it. I just pulled the trigger and ordered the ESEE-6.

Now my question...I am under the impression that ESEE-5 handle scales will work on the ESEE-6. Does anyone know how I might be able to get a set of ESEE-5 scales for my ESEE-6, (when it gets here) so that I can have the option of the bow divot with my 6?

Thanks for any help and I'm glad to be here. :D

only way is to get a 5 and swap the scales, fit wont be perfect but will be very very close.

that or add a bow drill divot yourself. not tough to do by the way.

take it easy

welcome to the forums!

yes the 5 scales will fit the 6, but the fit will be sloppy. handle scales are fitted to each blade and cannot be purchased separately. the only way to do the switch is if you have both knives.

edit: looks like dave beat me.

Yeah I thought about taking a round sanding bit on the dremel and doing it. But I tend to be impatient and screw things up :D

I gues it gives me an excuse to get a 5 then huh?

drill press and 1/2" bit will give you a bow drill divot in no time.
if you drill about 1/8" - 3/16" deep, you should be good to go.

Jeff should just make a keychain divot for all the bow drill lovers out there... teflon coated aluminum-lightweight and low friction.

I'm going to drill a divot in my RC4 the next time I am over at the RMJ shop. I already use the RC4 to make bow drill sets...might as well just put a divot in it too.

This is is something I have been thinking about ever since I realized the butt cap from my Shrike will work as a bearing block...except I was thinking something for around the neck. Plus Ryan told me about some super tough, super slick synthetic material and it has given me an idea...for my Izula sheath :)

Just curious...

How much/what kind of damage, if any, is done to the handle
when the bow drill divot is utilized?

Thanks...

Someone on here posted that they removed the middle screw from the handle of their knife for a bow divot. Could be a cheap and easy solution...

I've started a few fires with mine and didn't notice any damage. The divot will polish up pretty nice by the time you're done. Other than that, I didn't notice any change in the micarta. Extensive use may make a difference though.

If you know how to use a bow drill, and know when to back off the pressure and go for speed... I have seen no damage at all in the micarta scales on the knife I've used. I have heard where people have burned their spindle through the scale...I think it was a case of too much pressure but that's just my opinion as I was not there at the time. I know some who put divots in their handles drill down to the metal to start with.

Just use a drill press. It'll be a better fit with the handles. Otherwise you sacrifice comfort and safety for a bow drill divot.

If you're going to drill a divot in the handles be sure you set a stop on your drill press so you don't go all the way through the handle

If you come out the other side of the opposite scale (or your hand if you’re holding the knife while drilling) you’ve gone too far!

by any chance was he talking about HDPE?
If yes, you can buy chunks of it from Woodcraft or Rockler - or just cut up a blue plastic 55 gallon drum.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions guys. I am not very skilled with a bow drill as it is, but I am practicing. I just thought it would be a good feature on my 6 but it won't be a necessity for me. I may just try my hand at buying some micarta and making an extra set of scales to change out so I can keep my originals.
