new to the forum and have a question/pic request

I vote ESEE-4.

I use mine in the woods a lot and love it. :D

It is also very capable of batoning

I've posted this picture a couple times but, I think it applies here.

My EDC general use for everything around the house knife is the 3. Even though I'm not a huge fan of sheath, I will admit, it sure goes on and off the belt quite easily.

My take in the woods and use for everything knife is the 4 with orange handles. Initially, I was not a fan of the orange, but, it won me over. Sure glad it did. I dropped the knife in a foot of snow and the orange was so easy to spot. Even in leaves you could lose a black one, Orange can't be lost.

Bottom line, if I could only own one knife, it would be the ESEE 4.

If you click on a username in a post you should get an option in the drop-down to send a PM. Shotgun has the feature enabled, you don't. It is possible that PMs can only be sent to paid members...

I don't think "registered users" have pm privileges.

No new knives out, take a knife you trust whole heartedly. And bring the new one along for testing. :D

I'd go with the 4. I like my hest. But in the woods I prefer the blade length. I carry my six more often, however between the two you're looking at, I'm with the 4. The handles are not a problem for me.

I have both and between the two of them I would pick the 4 for a woods knife, especially if you are carrying a smaller folder. For me the HEST would be a stand alone and would be to close to the folder, where as the 4 could fulfill a much larger array of duties.

But if I were just backpacking the AT I would take my 3 along. It is my favorite ESEE knife, it is great for detail work, works great for batoning, and is very light weight. But on the other hand I love all of them the 3, HEST, and 4 all compete for belt time.

I also second ron's comment about no new knives into the woods, whichever knife you get make sure you have plenty of time to get comfortable with it and trust its abilities before taking it out into the woods

I'll add....
I love, Love, LOVE my HEST. However, if I could only have or the other.... I think I'd have to pick the ESEE-4 for what you're asking about.

Thank God I don't have to choose between the two, though. For just plain utility, the HEST is hard to beat.

I'd actually recommend the Izula. I have read that on the AT a smaller lighter knife is recommended especially if you stay close to the trail. I don't have experience on the AT so I might be speaking out of my .....;)

I meant to add that this would be the first ESEE you would need...

I would say if you stay ON the trail, and barring no unexpected problems, the Izula would be adequate. As would the HEST. BUT, I still think the ESEE-4 would be the best.

I would bet he most popular ... or at least common... knife on the AT would be a Vic Tinker or some such. Or maybe a Vic with a saw... you know... for emergencies.

Not knocking Vic's.... I carry them... in fact, several every day. But I realize their limitations, too.

yeah, i realize that since we will mostly be staying on the trail, the 4 is more than enough knife, but there are hiking/camping trips that i plan on doing where there is little to no trail, etc. thank you all for you input and advice. i look forward to purchasing my first ESEE soon!

Lotta vendors out there, but if you find an ESEE-4 in OD without orange scales, it's an aftermarket mod. I'm 99% certain that ESEE's have not been made in OD except with orange scales.

 100% certain unless someone switched scales on the OD ESEE and resold it .

OTOH, there is a thread about duracoating ESEE blades - according to that guy he can turn your blade any color you want it - you might email him and ask pricing.

hmmm od green blade 4 with canvas micarta....you mean like this one?
