Hey guys,
I've been lurking this forum for some time now getting ideas and telling myself that one day I'd start making knives, and yesterday was that day. I went down to the local metal supply to pick up some 01 tool steel, all they had was A2 in a reasonable size. So I bought a few small plates that are 3/8in thick. I know it's much less than ideal but I think I'm going to make the handle from the steel, as my knife I begun yesterday is a skinner.

Since I do not have a heat treat oven I will have to take it to a local place to have it heat treated.

I am doing most of the work with a angle grinder, files and a bench grinder. The picture you see below is just with a grinding wheel instead of a cutting wheel, I stopped there and bought some cutting wheels.

Anyways I just wanted to come on here and say thank you to all the advise I've already received and I'm sure I'll get tons more in the future.

Good for you that you are getting some practice in!

3/8 is extremely thick for a knife. It would be ok for an axe.

1/8 (.125) or .100 would make a much better skinner.

Yea I was looking for 1/8 01 but they didn't have much of any tool steel. Learned my lesson, next time I'll order it in and be patient. This one will definitely take some time but it will be worth it in the end.

So did some more work so far today, got the thing all cut out and cleaned up a bit to see how it feels. It turned out my handle was not big enough so I made the tail smaller. Overall I'm very happy with the shape, now I just need to figure out how to grind this blade and blend it with the handle.

Getting there, need to contour the handle a bit more and smooth out the files marks. Then to heat treat

Angel grinder, bench grinder, and lots of lots of files. Thanks guys, I'm gonna sand it tonight and contour it. What do you guys think about those machining marks on the side? Should I keep them for grip or smooth it out? I'm on the fence about it
