New to the forum, and seeking expert advice

Not all Emersons have chisel ground blades.

The CQC12 and a few others Emerson have, per Emerson, have conventional V ground blades.

I took a look @ the "Mini Ruckus", also like the look of that. May have to re-think my choice of blade length. As I said, I've been carrying for about 40 years, and NEVER had a problem before. But........since our civil rights (and common sense), seem to be going the way of the "do-do", I see that in NE. where I'm from, anything over 3.5" is now considered a "concealed weapon". Used to be a "pocket knife". What a world!!!!!!!

Yes, what a world. I live in one of the most gun restrictive states in the NE, but it hasn't gotten around to outlawing knives yet. I'm sure it's on the agenda, though.

The penalties got so stiff that I stopped carrying handguns in Washington, D.C., and Maryland, but the last time I carried in D.C., I was in an underground garage with a date and had a group of four or five youths approaching us and no cops anywhere. If I hadn't had the .38 in my coat pocket, I don't think I would have gotten out of it. Unfortunately, knives are poor substitutes for guns and are only good for last ditch unless you really know what you're doing.

So now I carry an extending baton and my 5-inch Cold Steel Voyager and if I'm caught, well, they got me.

Knives are too important not to have, whether for a loose thread in my jacket or a loose thread in someone else's jacket who's trying to kill me.

Well, in my 40 years of carry, I've never pulled a knife on anyone, and hope I never have to. But, if they try to hurt me or my family, I know enough to make them wish they would have worked for a living.

If that is the case then the Mini-Rukus may be for you, and BM makes those inlay grips for the mini also! Don't mean to keep pushing the grips but they do look plenty cool and give the knife a tiotally different look.

Confederates choice of the H&K model is right on also. Like Confederate, good luck with whatever knife you end up with.:thumbup::D

OK fells, now I've got three EXCELLENT choices!! "Cutter17", I do like the wine-wood inlay grips for the mini-ruckus. In fact, I think it's a toss-up between that and the "RSK Mk1". Wish I had the $$$ for all three, but alas, I must choose. Thanks for all the informed advice, it was a great help!!

I'm new to this forum, as I thought it was probably the best place to get the advice I seek. I'm looking to spend somewhere between $200-$300 on a new folding knife for myself for everyday carry & use. I've been carrying for 40 years, started with a "Buck", and have owned Spyderco, Gerber, etc. This time out, I want the toughest, best performer I can afford. I want to make the "step up". What is you guys recommendation for a folder that is durable, holds the best edge, good design, and comfortable?? I'm looking for clip point, plain edge, 4" blade, pocket clip. Any help out there?? I've had a "Microtech" SOCOM Elite reccomended to me, but those seem to be impossible to find??

Al Mar Sere or Mini Sere. I believe you will love these knives. They are very solid lock ups, and very sharp. Vg-10 steel and g10 handles. I love mine.

if you really want to stay below 3.5 inches the 710 is out too. I am sooooooo glad I live in vermont where we don't worry about that stuff and you don't need a permit to carry a concealed gun :)

If you do drop down to 3.5" for a blade, then I'll add either the regular 551 Griptilian or the 552 Ritter RSK to my suggestions.

Hard to go wrong with either.

As I said in the beginning, there is a lot of personal preference involved. The Rukus design I don't like too much. I am sure it is a nice enough knife but the guard protrudes so far over the edge, that I find the design very impractical. Just my opinion though.

As an aside though: I would consider the Rukus a spearpoint not a clippoint?

See...now aren't you glad you had that .38 with you? Glad it turned out O.K. for you.

I can't see laying out a bunch of money for a folder. I have been using and carring knives all my life and I have never used a folder for rough duty. Many good folders will perform all the duties that one should ask of a folding knife for well under a 100 bucks. For tough duty the Fixed knife is the only way to go. I don't think you can do better that something like the Spyderco Endura for a folder no matter how much you spend. If you just want the Name, go ahead and get one of the (keep up with the jones models.) If you just want a excellent folder, Go with the Spyderco or Kershaws. About 60-100 bucks worth.

Not practical to wear a sheath knife where I live. That would be my first choice too, but the "PD" here wouldn't appreciate "Rambo". No sense of humor on their part. I've owned both Kershaw & Spyderco & choose not to purchase another, but thanks for the tip.

Come on Jim, you know by now that buying knives does not always include simple common sense. ;):D Some folks, me included, like to have something unique and something with a precision build and with the best materials available. Whether or not it is "keeping up with the Jones" I don't know. I do know I like every folder I currently have and the least expensive model I have is $130.00 (ZT0200) with my most expensive being $525.00 (custom Jeff Hall large Bounty Hunter). Practicality and common sense went out the door with all my knife purchases,:D but hey, that's ok as I like them and I enjoy them, and I even use them, and every time I do I just marvel at how well they are put together!!:D:)

Here are some strong folders you may want to review

Blade-Tech Rijbac
Strider Sng
Kershaw Tyrade
Al Mar Sere 2000
ZT0300

I own the Rijbak and like it very much. I also own Emerson cqc7, Lone Wolf t2 Ranger, Al mar sere 2000 and Kershaw Tyrade. As far as strenght from strongest to weakest I would rank them this way

1) Kershaw Tyrade - Ti frame lock - this is a full TI frame and very thick
2) Blade Tech Rijbak - Ti Frame Lock - Ti and G-10
3) Al Mar Sere 2000 - SS lock liner - but this is a thick strong liner
4) Emerson CQC7 - Ti lock line
5) Lone Wolf T2 Ranger - SS lock liner, Nice knife but fails the wack test 70% of the time. I think the liners are too thin for such a big blade.

I never owned a Strider but hear that they are strong. Also a Zero Tolerance ZT0300 looks very strong.
