new to the forum and starting to set up a small shop, I have for years dabbled in blacksmithing and have made a couple of knives, spike knives and such. Just ordered a KMG 10' wheel and am toying around with the idea of moaning it on my shop smith as it really has a great variable speed set up, just need to get matching pulleys and a bit of hardware to put it together.

Waned to see if anyone knows of someone that has used the KMG and has any do's and dont's so to speak.I enjoy there repurpose of metals such as spikes and springs and things like that and would be looking for some ideas for beginner projects.

All set with my forge and that set up, but really needed the upgrade of the grinder.

I know there are probably some threads on Spike knives and will search a bit to get some different ideas.

I bet over 80% of the people on this forum either own a KMG or have used one. I have one. They're a great machine and most designs are copied from the KMG. Save yourself the headache and order some 1080/1084 if you want to make a quality knife. And also Welcome to the group!

Yes on the 1080/1084, the spike knives and such really are just for me fun and not really ones that would go into the category of good functional blades ( more of a decretive item as many members of my family worked all their lives on the railroad )

Great link in post #3.

Make spike hawks, door handles, coat racks, and other art work items from the RR spikes. Use knife steel for knives.

My thoughts was to combine my forging with learning the grinding portions of making knives on things i have available. Learning plunge cuts and different types of grinds on this just made sense to me rather than have a pile of purchased steel in the trash pile while i learn technique. Certainly it is understood that finished knives should be made from proper materials. One suggestion on this forum was to practice on mild steel to perfect certain mandatory skills as you do not just go to the grinder and get it right the first time.
