Welcome, I sharpen because it's cheaper than therapy and the docs won't let me ride my bike yet, (something about a half a ton of motorcycle and 4 surgeries to the shoulder  Again Welcome to the forum, as you'll soon find out, I'm a man of few words. :D

i fully understand this. same reason i shine my own shoes/boots, wax my snowboard, hand polish wood, etc. it's therapeutic. I'm sharpening impaired though and have scratched up a couple of blades . the stress of worrying about messing up prevents the same level of therapy from sharpening, but i hope to get there one day

Blades will get scratched, the better you get, the less it'll happen.

yea... i never scratched the cheaper knives i practiced on. then i guess i got cocky, and scratched up two of my nicer blades, one of them pretty badly. ever since then, i'm extra careful

I can tell. Thanks for the welcome. It is cheap therapy. I was up in the middle of the night last night thinking too much, so I went down to the basement and started refurbishing one of my knives. Very relaxing.
