Welcome to Blade Forums! Start by reading the newbies sticky at the top of the page, thats where I started out, and am still referring to. There are some great books on knife making also. I bought "Hot To Make Knives" by Richard W. Barney and Robert W. Loveless on ebay and it helped me out alot. Also see if there are any makers in your area that would be willing to let you hang out with them and learn a few things. Good luck and post pics of your work.

thank you for the welcome pancho. I ordered a book called $50 knife shop off amazon last night. They guy that gave me the piece of 1095 is a long time knife maker. he doesnt do it professionally but more like a long time hobby. im sure if i have any questions he will help me in any way that he can.

thanks again

Good combo to start :D; a good book, a good steel and a good knifemaker friend. No worries, you'll make some nice knives. With some talent I bet you'll become famous :).
Welcome to BF ....

Thanks again to everyone. Im not even hoping to become famous, but it would be nice. All im looking to do is make something that is better than what i can buy at the store. I just want something that i can be proud of and say hey i made that myself

I think 99% of us started because we wanted to make a knife better than ones we bought in a store. I could've bought a pretty good custom by the time I produced the first knife I would trust to go hunting with. :D BUT nothing beats pulling a knife out with your name on it and using it :D

I dunno 'bout that, winning a $100.00 bet and the other guy's knife when you carve the cutting edge off of his "why would anyone bother to make a knife when Solingen Steel knives are the best in the world" knife:D with the one he has just been harassing you about making.
besides that one little moment though, Will is right. Making your own tool and using it and enjoying it's use rocks!

After that it becomes an obsession, because you reach a point where you realize there's no limit to what you can create, you just need to learn how to manifest your creation. Every new thing you learn opens new creative doors (although sometimes it leads to the dreaded pile under the bench growing)

Nothing is ever perfect, everything you learn educates you as to the details you should have paid more attention to, you improve those, and you notice the next level.
Have fun with it
