I am interested in starting to make a few knives and have no idea on how to do it. I would like to make a fixed blade knife that is about 12 inches long and I would like to be finished in black but I cannot to seem to find what the black finish is. If anyone can enlighten me I would appreciate it.

Go buy "how to make knives" and "$50 dollar knife shop" and read the sticky at the top of this forum. The link within that post wil cover alot of ground. Good luck and welcome.

Steve that black coating is called paint. It can be as simple as spray can black or as exotic as two component epoxy black paint though some people use black powder coat paint (not particularly desirable because the coatings tend to be very thick)

You can also leave the heat treating scale on, or they do sell blackening kits, in that case it's actually a different form of rust that will help protect your blade from the bad rust

Welcome to blade forums.

I thought I'd chime in as I'm also a new maker. Just working on my third knife.

The advise about buying some books and reading through the sticky at top is not meant to dampen your spirits. The plain truth is that there is a lot more to knifemaking than at first meets the eye.

Before you start out, I suggest (and I believe most others here would as well) that you mentally prepare yourself for at least a couple of months of reading and researching. This isn't by any means necessary to start knife making, however you will probably find it a much more rewarding experience if you take this vital first step. I've found that patience is truely a virtue in this sport. Each knife I've made so far has taught me to be MORE patient. I know it's hard, but it really will make a difference.

What do you want your first knife to do? Everything about a particular knife is a compromise between at least 2 different variables. (weight vs. strength vs. chopping power; rust resistance vs. toughness, etc. etc.) Answering these kinds of questions will lead you to decisions about design, steel choice, and technique.

You will find that in this forum you have at your disposal many extremely knowlegeable people with an immense amount of information literally at your fingertips. Having said that however, you will probably find that some of these individuals want to see you do your homework before you start asking questions. The answer to "How can I make a knife?" has filled volumes, and cannot be answered all at once.

So grab a beer, turn off your cell phone, and start reading. ;)

I third the motion. Start with the sticky thread and pick up the books mentioned by others when you get a chance. I ordered my copy of "$50 Knife Shop" from Amazon IIRC and got my copy of "How to Make Knives" at Barnes & Noble... so they shouldn't be hard to find. Your local library might have some resources too.

Welcome to the forums! This is a great group of guys who will steer you in the right directions.
