New to W&SS. Advice?

Before you go and blow a bunch of cash on equipment that may not suit your needs, canvass friends, relatives and co-workers on what you are going to do and ask to borrow/ rent or buy cheaply.

You might be surprised with the results, lots of people have redundant gear dusting away as they trade up to what they really want.

Hey man. First off I think it's cool that you're goin out in the spring. I'm up in MN and I get how cold and wet the spring can be in this neck of the woods. Heed to the three needs: food, shelter, fire. I'd simply bring everything you would on a regular campin trip and then bringing everything you want to practice. When I practice I usually just try to keep the discipline to not use what I have until I need to.
Fire: matches, lighter, third option to practice with.
Shelter: (Try goin minimal) sounds like you're plannin on bringin a tent which is of course always a good idea, but maybe bring an 8'X10' and at least 100' of rope.
Food: seein's how you're not really going to be trappin or hunting's not really gonna be an option, just pack what you need for now :D

I hope everything goes well for ya man.

For food I was planning on bringing some MRE-type meals, but since there is small game in season I am going to give hunting a try. I have experience hunting and am pretty accurate with my .22, but have never cooked game in the field. Thorough cooking is obviously important for health reasons, but are there other things I should be careful about with wild game?
