New Tom Ferry knife....

ground and shaped it from the bottom, because that is where the taper is......started with Cubitron, and worked down to cork and Scotchbrite belts to feather the grinds.....then comes the hard part.

I use a q-tip to apply the etchant until the transition disappears, than use a vial as an etching tank, masking off areas with shoe polish until the whole thing looks proper.....it took 3 hours, but to me, was worth it.
But you can't take better pics than that ?
Just kidding of course, STeven. :)

Awesome snag, sounds like the pick of the litter from the Ferry table.
It's just in the last year, with the input from another advanced collector, that I was made to appreciate how highly sought after his work is.
Thanks for sharing the detail work.

Doug

Nice knife, STeven. We probably shouldn't let you get near any classic Ferraris or Jags, though.:D Thanks for the tip on how to re-etch. I may have to do that at some point with end of a buttcap.

Not to turn this into a "how-to thread"...but timing is everything....it is better to use weaker ferric cholride solution to maximize contrast, and check it every 2 minutes or so.....buff or use steel wool depending upon what I am trying to see, and use MEK to remove any contaminant....when the whole thing is done, do a quick shot with a loosely sewn buff to further minimize transition, re-etch, neutralize with TSP(Wayne Goddard gave me this one), rub with Flitz and oil after that.

This is why it takes so much time, and I would never ask a maker to do this for me.....shop rates pile up quick...but it takes experience and skill, which you arguably have by now!:D

STeven Garsson

Interesting discussion.

As I said I like the knife. However I buy a maker's work, so if I know a knife has been
altered I would never buy it. Different strokes, I guess.

I'm interested to know how other collectors feel about this?

STeven, appreciate the spot etching tutorial. Have you ever thought about trying your hand as a maker?

Making knives is FAR too much work, Kevin....I have made enough knives to know that!;)

I would be interested to see some of the knives you've made, STeven.

Yeah...uh....maybe someday, Lorien, but not any time soon....I show them in person to makers and collectors I have known for many, many years...but thanks for showing an interest.

I'll have to see the pic of the knife before the mods, to determine exactly how badly you fukked up one of Tom's masterpieces. :p:D

alrighty then.

Hey Steve why not post a pic of an original Garsson knife ?

I personally would never alter a finished knife design from a mastersmith.

I consistently see you offer your personal critique on this site, and others, however have seen none of your own designs posted.

perhaps I missed that thread.

Let's see the Garsson originals.

Blake...you didn't miss that thread...I don't post knives that I have made myself.....I'm not a knifemaker...just have made knives...it isn't for public consumption.....

I wouldn't have even posted this one, but Tom asked me to.

In my 25+ years of collecting, I have allowed about 25% of my collection to be photographed and displayed....and it will stay that way...My fellow collectors like Mr. Gill, Mr. Heger, Mr. Jones and Mr. White are free to display their collections in any public manner that they choose, but I am far too shy to do same.

What started out as another "show a beautiful knife thread" has taken a couple interesting turns.

Some collectors feel comfortable showing their knives and some don't.
IMO, there's very good reasons on both sides. Probably better reasons for not showing then for.

I display all my and knives, post photos on forums, have a very visible photosite and have allowed a few to be displayed in galleries. For me it's part of the fun of collecting and I feel every custom knife that's seen promotes the industry.

Whenever Steven and I get together, he always has a big bag of knives to show and I really look forward to it. Yep, very gracious he just likes a smaller audience.

tell you what.. I'll go ahead and show my first knife.....
I am not proud and I would be a liar if i were to say it was mine
but at least I am posting it....dot .... dot ... dot ... come on Steve
man up - we all want to see ("?)

Do I owe you something, Blake? No, I thought not.

You're right...I do frequently offer critique about knives, frequently asked for, sometimes not....I know very little about you, and you might know even less about me.....you want to see one of the knives I designed? Go find a mini-auto by GT Knives, I designed the blade and handle, at least the basics...my employer added the thumb ramp.....oh yeah, I made every frikkin part in a GT knife for almost a year, except the ones that were outsourced, and then put them together...by hand.

There are some that want to see the custom knives that I have made....but they might not have earned that right, and some that already have, like Ed Fowler...you, Blake?....probably not.

STeven Garsson

"too shy" sounded more gracious than "too paranoid";)

It isn't paranoia if the fukkurs really ARE out to get you.;)

This one from Blake sits in my craw a little bit, but not much.

Tom Ferry was under the misunderstanding that I was Garssonizing a Don Fogg shiv a few years back, and had taken it upon myself......well, Don TOLD me to do it, because I wanted the edge set back a bit, and he didn't want to take the time to do it, but he was confident in my skills....so I started working on it.....and it was a lot of work with the EDM stones he told me to get, and then Raymond Richard burned his shop down, and a bunch of us contributed stuff to help him get back on his feet, and that dagger shiv Fogg was one that got contributed...Nick Wheeler finished it out...and it brought high dollar in the auction....am I supposed to feel bad about that?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson
