My Sister-N-Law picked up a Gerber sport axe from Gander mnt. today for me as a Christmas gift. What do you guys think of this little axe ? The handle has Gerber on it but the head has Fiskars on it . Are these good, are they easy to resharpen & do they hold a good edge ?

I think they are the best in the Gerber line for a tool you will pack around. They are good and they aren't too hard to resharpen. As far as holding a good edge, ??? Mine does not seem to keep a super sharp edge that long, but it works just fine. I think they are better steel than whatever fiberglass or rubber handled hatchet you would buy around town. Enjoy your new hatchet.

I think you will find it a very servicable hatchet. I have had one for a while now and really like it.

My understanding is that the Gerber Sport Axe and the Fiskars Garden Axe differ only in branding and the orange handle on the Garden Axe. You will find a lot of favorable comments about the "Fiskars 14" hatchet" around.

This is my favorite axe when I am traveling light on my ATV. Not to big, yet not to light. It has a longer handle than the pakaxe, and the head is reasonably light yet heavy enough for light to moderate work.

As I recall, Fiskars now owns Gerber...or the other way around (???).

Gerber used to be a fine and innovative company. Since Fiskars bought them out, they've never been the same.

It's a tough world out there. Camillus and Schrade are gone altogether. Gerber still has a few good knives. :)

I have heard a lot of good reviews on the fiskars, the edge angle is apparently great for all around camp axes. In the end I opted for the Gransfors Bruks SFA mostly for the traditional look, but I have no doubt your new axe won't let you down.

I had a lot of responses to a thread that I started a few days ago, questioning the difference between GB, Wetterling, and Fiskars. From what the guys were telling me, the Fiskars is better for splitting, whereas the GB and Wetterling were better for general purpose/ all around use; kind of like in lieu of a knife.
I wound up ordering the GB SFA from Ben's.

Thanks for the info. I'll be packing it on camping trips or ATV rides, I use my CS kukri machete & BK-7 for my other jobs ;)
