So this last week I picked up 2 new tools for the shop so I can get more work done =)

First is a gigantic shop fan with a big 1/2 horse motor on the back. It's 3 feet around at the top and stands about 6 feet tall. This thing moves so much air i'll be able to evacuate my whole garage in seconds, and keep forging in hot weather.

and the other is a forging press... ok its probably not what you're all thinking , but it's a very nice 4 thread forging press. I need to make some top and bottom dies for it and make some tooling for it. The base weighs around 200lbs. The press itself weighs over 250 including the arm. Just about killed myself getting it out of my truck, even with the help of a neighbor. Gota wait till I get the snow outa my driveway before I get this down to my garage and set up.

COOL STUFF Justin!

A screw press like that has a TON of use in a smith's shop... You're definitely going to be thinking of things for YEARS on what to do with it.

Yeah, the first thing I need to do is teach myself to weld so that I can fabricate top and bottom dies, and top and bottom die holders. I want to make the die holders so that they'll take the same dies I need to make for my treadle hammer. The price was right, and if anyone in the new england area is looking for one, the person i purchased this from has 4 more, all in perfect condition. The threads on the screw are pristine, and these are older screw presses, built like tanks, unlike some of the newer fly presses which aren't sturdy enough for their size.

Why don't you just set that fan up at the top of your driveway and blow the snow away! Hey it's just a idea, looks like the fan might be able to do it!

those fly press's are cool some of them are really interesting looking

I imagine that they offer alot more control then a hydro press

I'm particularly jealous of the big fan. THey're expensive, and I'm using box fans right now!

that flywheel press will do just fine, its a bit more work than hitting a treadle on a hydraulic press, but it WILL get the work done

That press is awesome! You will love the fan also, i have one in my garage and when forging or general work on a hundred degree day, it's a lifesaver !!!!!

Forum member Gene Chapman has been using a forging press for awhile and has some application info one of his books, in case you're interested: Hot Shop II
