Some mangy basket stole my opinel a while ago , that thing had been with me thru a lot , literally bushfires and floods , it was there in easy reach when I felt my safety was threatened , skinned cleaned and parted out more animals than I can count , you know , it was my knife .

I figured tho , since I was looking for replacement , Id try getting something about the same but more modern .. and ordered a RAT1 as well , while I was waiting for them to show up I grabbed a Svord as well .

I have them all now in my hot little hands

I like them all , seriously so . I think Im going to stick with the Opinel as my main knife tho . The Svord makes a bit of trouble for me if I forget and put it in the wrong pocket , the sticky out bit sticks into my car seat getting in and out of my car if I forget and put it in my back pocket . The RAT1 , I have to resharpen more often than I like , at least compared to the other two , but then thats probably me just been spoiled having used Hi Carbon blades so long .

I found too that when I was getting a bit heavy handed with the RAT1 , it let me know in no uncertain terms ... I have the bruises on my hand to prove it .. the handle with its 2 slab construction makes for some hot spots with prolonged general use , and for bruises if you do push it hard . Maybe I have to relearn how to do it with this kind of knife .

Anyway , this is what I been doing :) playing with new toys

Myal,

Sorry to hear about your stolen Opinel. As far as getting beat up by your RAT-1 there might be a bit to help, but the opinion I've slowly come to over the years is that the best handle for general (non-stabbing) use, is one the likes of your Opinel there. I'm a fixed blade guy and I'm looking at Puukko's because of their handle shape. Good luck and enjoy your new blades.

God bless,
Adam

Three bargain classics right there. Good stuff!

Thanks :)
If our laws were different , and the general people here less freaky about knives Id be carrying fixed blades .
I deal with preschool and high school staff , and with Social Security Employee kind of people . I have to keep a low profile more or less .

Myal,

I understand about the laws. I hate going state to state, especially to New Jersey where a lot of my family lives. I gotta basically ditch the knives when I go there. Wish you could carry fixed. But, like I said, that Opinel has a good comfy handle design to it anyway.

God bless,
Adam

New toys are always fun. Sucks your Opinel was stolen, but good to hear that you got a new one. They are one of my favorite folders.

You have got a good eye for high value low cost knives gotta love opinels for the money.

Thank you :)

My budget isnt big , usually , so I kind of am trying to get big performance out of inexpensive knives .
the new Opinel is a totally different animal to the old ones , seriously . I think they have changed not just the grind but either the steel or their heat treat , whatever they did , they got it right .

Im thinking of getting a few more for the family .
