Here is a large knife I have been excited about for some time. Since I started mine I have also started one for a Blade formite.

TAke a look and see what you think. Both 5/32" 0-1 with 5.5" blade length.

Can you spot the first and second temper line?

I love how you got those hamon lines to flow with the edge and end just behind the plunge! :eek: Very nice looking knives indeed.

Matt

Wow, those look great. About the hamon, it's so smooth, I though that it was where you had used a separate grit. THe hamon is just a part of the blade.

The hammond is where the hardened steel is. I differentially harden. That means I ONLY get the edge to critical. Some clay coat the back. I am sure someone who can better explain will chime in.

Yah, I know the process, but I just love how smooth it is. Do you just keep a firebrick or something to get the correct hight for the edge quench, or just aim by hand.
[what I mean by using the firebrick as a guide]
++++++++++++++++ (water)
++++++++++++++++ (more water)
1''''''''''Firebrick''''''''''1

I didnt use anything as a guide. I have the blade in a vise grip and go to town with the O/A torch. I try my best to keep the blade heated uniformly. when the edge is to criticle I let soak and raise the temp some then quench the whole blade. This last batch turned out nice!
Here is a few more BEFORE teh final finishing.

I had to use a rosebud tip for the bottom blade. 7" blade 3/16" stock so it really sucks the heat.

Going bigger? :D The first blade I ever made was the big (3 knives together pic) design in the pic above. I really dove in head first :D
Man I like your camper. That would be a only one carry design for sure!
Gota love the hammond line huh?
What forge do you have?

Borrowed a heat-treat oven where I work. Its an older one and I have done a lot of testing with Rc hardness tester to figure out the actual temps.

Darren Ellis from Knoxville sent me some Satanite (Super nice guy) to try. That is what I used on this blade. Neat stuff.............

As much as I want a KMG, I guess my next big purchase is going to be a digital oven. (Rob---Do you have a dollar-down-dollar-a-week-plan?)

I am also thinking of making a forge. I have been looking at IG's plans, but I really need more detail. (You listening George?)

They sure look great Brian. The bigger ones and a blast to make. I'm really getting into making the large knives. Nice job.

Id like to have a digital oven too....have you thought about salt pots?
Don't know much about salt pots. Maybe I need to research the forums and catch up on them.

I think this will be a repeat design ;)

As far as the HT I am learning to get the blade just below critical...then concentrate getting to critical then just above. Seems to be a way to get the steel even heated.
