New Trailsman design FINALY underway

Well, someone sure isn't feeling like being modest about his knief for sure ;) .
Wow, that turned out great! What are the scales made of?

What do you mean "to get the blade just below critical...then concentrate getting to critical then just above"

Great Knife!

The scales are Micarta. I am heat treating with a torch so I have to make sure that I get the steel evenly heated. Just below critical is about 1300 degrees. Critical is around 1450 degrees. (in 0-1)
someone can jump in if I have my numbers wrong.

Didnt mean to be so excited in the previous post...he he ;)

Thanks Dan. It was actually a fun knife to watch develope. Next is the 8" blade version! When I get to it ;)

Fetz - Its 0-1 steel. Holds a better edge than 1095 IMHO.
Hey Terry - That micarta is Burgundy linen. Man it is rough to shape without a grinder!! Feels nice when its all done though.

Great job on the finished piece! it looks like an awesome camp knife...nice blade/ handle ratio...i like it!

hey brian, so you do your own heat treating of 01 with an o/a torch? i just
got some 01 and all i have is an o/a torch and would like to do the h/t myself.

Michael,
I'll get you top shots tonight (if I remember!) Your too kind ;)

Fetz - email me about what your doing. You can HT the blade yourself just watch that you dont get it too hot. Do you have scrap left over from cutting out your blade?

Micarta? I have seen all sorts of things with micarta now- how do you get it to look like wood?

peter - I just took it to 220 and rubed a little wd40 on and steel whooled it. Its smooth :D

Wow, that's some pretty cool stuff.
Have you tested any of your large knives?
I'm not sure who it was, but someone here took there knives on a camping trip with them, and gave them all a test run- pretty good excuse to take a break.

Sure I test them. I dont test the knives that are sold after there finished but I do test the heat treat before I complete them.
Took this one out last night. Made easy work of med size limbs. The handle on this one allows to choke back and be able to get a good whack at things. Choking up on the blade was equally was cumfy.
After an hour of beatig it around I got it back to shaving sharp with just a strop. Pretty easy to sharpen. Thats carbon steel for ya'
:D

Edited to add : The tip shape was nice because it was tapered enough for detail work if needed.

Cool!
Are you any good at drawing Brian? The thought of drawing the handle correctly is nuts. I can't draw worth anything- will that impede upon my ability to make decent, comfy handles?
Thanks, Peyton

I'm seriously impressed Brian. The knife is looking very good but doing it the way you are is equally impressive.

Peter RYT - Do you have a bandsaw at home? I cut blanks to see how the feel. A trick in art school I learned was draw something.....then look at it in the mirror. You'd be surprised. But to answer your question can I draw??
Nah...Just sketch..modify...resketch. Get some tracing paper. When you get a part that you like just retrace just that part and keep going. Before you know it your drawings will take shape.

Peter Nap - Hey...what do you mean doing it my way! :D

Thanks Brain, I'll practice I guess. That is a no on the band saw, what I've instead is a hand drill, hacksaw, dremel, and all sorts of other hand tools, including a jig saw. Does metal usually come anealed? All my study has been in forging, so I'm a bit behind on some things that I would have learned otherwise.
