Well, as of Thurs. morning I am now in daddy training mode. Our first, a boy, was born at 9:09. I cannot wait to get him out in the woods and teach him how to build a debris shelter. ( Iused them as a kid for " forts"). I am considering getting him a custom knife with his name engraved on it. Haven't yet decided about that though. (Funds are well, tight! Diapers and all:))

Congrats-- and take a deep breath. You have time :) It will be a couple years before he can hike. Do spend time with him, it goes fast too. There's nothing like watching wildlife with a young kid--- their awe of nature is incredible.

Do travel and camp with you kids. We took ours camping very soon. We were car camping at first, but it got us out of the house and they were really comfortable outside by the time they were able to walk and talk. My son is in college now and works as a summer camp counselor. Both he and my daughter know and appreciate the landscape and the natural world around them.

It is SO weird to meet an adult who has never been camping. I tool a physical geology class years ago and some of the students just couldn't get a grasp of things and I came to realize that they had never walked a stream bank, hopped rocks, climbed a mountain, or seen a glacier or volcano up close. That is sad, because in the Pacific Northwest, that is the "back yard."

Well, I know he will be car camping this summer as we go to my brothers wedding in KY. (No prolonged trips though - have to make the wife happy!) I know what you mean about adults who have never been or can't camp. It is weird. It is like meeting adults who can't swim. Where I grew up everyone could swim by the time they where 5. Oh well, I have the next few years to impart the little knowledge I have of woodslore to him, after that, we learn together

Get a custom 110 with his name on it, then get the same one with your name on it. Make sure he sees you using it (yours) on all your hiking/camping trips together. Then when he is old enough, give him the one with his name. He will fell so proud to have a knife "just like dads." but with his name.

IF your interested in a custom for your baby check the makers and see what they offer I've been told Randall made Knives has a good layaway plan plus with the five year back order if you start paying when he is 6 yrs. old it will give you plenty of time to pay it off and he will be 11 by the time it is ready. Just a thought:)

Five year wait? I'll just order a busse and take a five year loan out. That way I get to play with before he he gets old enough to enjoy it. ( For a busse I think he should be at least 30-35!)

Tasselhoff,
Congratulations! Check out the Cub Scouts in a couple of years too, me and my boy have a lot fun with it.

no better kids knife than a vic sak handy and cheap the alox saks like the farmer have an engraving plate on them sor for 20 beans and a trip to the jewlers he'll have a heck of an engraved folder that would be any boys dream. Congrads BTW...being a dad is the greatest thing in my life.

Heres a good first knife, Heck, I'd play with it.:D

Congrat. to you & yours & may GOD bless you & yours;) I have twin boys (4yrs old) I'm taking them camping this sprin for the first time. Remember they are only little once :( & everything you teach them in the first few years will stick forever with them so becareful ! Keep him outdoors as much as possible & make it fun & he will want it more & more as he grows ! ;)

Congrats!!! Boy Scouts was the best thing my parents got me into, otherwise I wouldn't be here, I'd be working in some dirty garage or something. Also, get him a SAK Alox and do the engraving thing, sounds like a real winner!

Congratulations, I became a father 9 months ago and it is amazing watching them grow. It truely is a life changing experience. Enjoy it
