I have been anxiously awaiting hunting season so I can try out my H1 on bear and deer. Bear season is here, but I have yet to find one. With all the time in the woods, though, I have found another great use for the H1.

It's mushroom season in Vermont, and the start of Chaga gathering season as well. Getting the stuff off of the host Birch Tree without the use of a hatchet can be challenging. I've tried a variety of knives, and even chisels, but the other day I decided to give the H1 a try. Perfect tool for the job. It's strong, stout point, and thick blade make it perfect for driving into the dense fungus mass using either my palm or a wooden mallet to pound on the protruding steel tang butt. It goes in easily, acts as a very effective wedge due to it's blade shape, and is thick enough to allow for some pretty good prying. Unlike a hatchet, it is easy with the H1 to be more surgical and remove what you want while leaving some of the fungus in place to continue the growth cycle.

On a related note, the H1 really sucks as a mushroom knife, as you would expect. I use a Mora #1 for harvesting wild mushrooms as well as slicing them up for consumption back at the house. I'd prefer to carry only one knife on these excursions, but the H1 is too thick to cut the mushroom stalks handily and the #1 is too thin to act as a Chaga wedge. What a burden to carry both. Sigh.
