New Victorinox Rescue Tool

How much and how available are the replacement blades and breakers? Looks like just the thing to have in the glove box :)

havent looked into replacements -hope not to use it so much that ill need em-what id love to see is other implements that could be plugged in in place of the saw and breaker to make it a pseudo customized use, ie add other normal items- -but thats not likely-but i think its a cool concept

i paid $45 US on special order-had these knives been a regular item i know they would be a few dollars lower each still

i in fact keep it in the center console -frankly im not certain that the original one hand fireman is any less in terms of serviceability -other than the breaking end point-its cost; considerably less ($28 as i recall) but not stay glo:rolleyes: but it does have the corkscrew and can opener that the Rescue does not

i dont know if you were sitting that you could assert enough force using the breaker end- possibly against a side window-more doubtably against the windshield or sun roof- add any sort of injury or constraint-such as water -and i dont know how it will work-im thinking a hammer would be best-this SAK was simply compact and unobtrusive-but ive since given it more thought-as much as i like stay glo i think id have passed on this one-i wasnt aware that a 'disc cutter' saw was so different from a regular saw- and apparently limited in application

This tool could be usefull to those of us who work in a volunteer department. For example, my town is entirely volunteer. Often, our guys will go to the scene of a call in their personal vehicals. In that case, having the ability to break glass can be very important. Just the other day one of our guys came to the scene of a flipped over car. He had a glassbreaker on the end of his gerber rescue knife, and managed to shatter the window and start working. The brain starts to die within 4-6 minutes without oxygen, with just about certain death in 10 in most cases. Seconds count here. The seatbelt cutter could potentially come in handy, though typically there are EMT shears around, etc. often the seatbelt can simply be unbuckled, which is much easier. I also dont see much use for a glass saw. Really, it is a lot easier to break the windows and use a sawsall to cut the top of the car off, through the posts. This is because a victim has to be put on a backboard to prevent serious injury to the neck. Its real hard to immobolize someone through a broken window. Even if the top of the car cant be lifted out, its much easier to use the jaws of life to rip your doors off, and then use hydraulic rams to move your dash and console out of the way. As for breaking a window on your own, it isnt that hard. Your certainly arent going to break the windshield or back window with a simple hand held glass breaker, they are tempered and really strong. It is however, easy enough to break through a side window, as long as you use the punch at the corner of the window. My suggestion? go pay 6-10 dollars and buy a window breaker that looks like a ballpoint pen, and use the saved money to buy a SAK better suited to EDC

well mine arrived today (2)
without wanting to sound like an idiot - i love the stay glo...
Yeah actually i was always a "SAK's have to be red" kinda guy but lately i've been hankering for alternatives, synthetic and natural (even metals).
I think the stay-glo grips are great for outdoors SAK's. I only wish SAK parts suppliers would start selling the stay-glo slabs separately. they sell all the other colours just not stay-glo.
:grumpy:

well i agree
but i also imagine this is the case because right now they are unique and may actually be a sales factor (to guys like me)

and, they may also be slowly 'acclimating' the market, that is, while red is the norm and many tac knives are ominous balck or grey, the bright yellow is 'wierd' , but if they are introduced alowly and allowed to become more mainstream, teh perhaps this unique aspect will boost sales in the long run-perhaps?? as i mentioned there is nothing that jumps out like stay glo handles against soil rock or grass, mid day or even more so after dusk-its amazing how the uv in the atmoshere -after the sun has recently set still reflects off the scales-sitting in camp, with moss and tundra all around-the scales just look almost lighted
