New Viking Sword - "Heimdall"

what a wonderful sword I love the use of the large pattern damascus the carving on the scabbard and damascus overlays just pull this together to make it the nicest Viking sword I have ever seen.

Thank you guys, I´m really glad you like it!

The pattern welding and engraving are excellent as is the leatherwork. Fantastic job! If I can ask what are the dimensions of the piece? I took a peek at your site as well, and it looks like you've just made a couple of forays into sword making, something I hope you continue. Do you have any thoughts of attempting some pieces in the area of swords that are more historically accurate or are you pretty much driven by customer demands or... ???

Total length: 67cm
Guard width: 7cm
Grip: 9,2cm

A historical accurate project would be interesting, but this is more who I am when it comes to knife/sword making. I got some more swords on their way but all of them are custom orders and, as you mentioned, I do have to think about what I can sell or not.

There are some really talented makers out there who makes exact historical replicas (Swedish swordmaker Peter Jonsson as an example.). As far as I know there are very few makers who make top grade "Royal" swords, so I just try to fill out that spot and find my place:)

That is amazing. The basket weave pattern with perspective is very unique.
Why is the enlarged view in your picture washed out? i would like to see all that detail.

Sorry for the picture. It´s all about balance and I just thought the "zoom in" on the sword ruined it a bit with full contrast. You got a more detailed picture of the handle on my homepage: http://www.northlandknives.se/pages.asp?page=forsale&bild_id=483&album_id=39 (It´s underneath the first picture)

Thanks for the specs. Yes, Peter does absolutely top notch work, it's a goal of mine to own one of his pieces some day. I totally understand about needing to have a business model that works for you! You can't blame a guy for trying to drag someone else with some obvious talent into the historical sword fold though can you? :)

Fantastic work, I was just at your website as well. Do you ever do any double bit War-axe/ hatchet projects? I could never afford one, but would love to see one of your designs. Thanks, Joe

Wow, I don't even know what to say. I don't think I've ever seen any craftsmanship that amazing before.

Wow! It has already been said but that sword is amazing!

The details just all work together. Every part has amazing details, but they all work together. Nothing looks "busy" or like it was added just to put more detail in. A lot of times on a piece this complex the details start to overwhelm or clash. Not so here!

I can't say anything to express anything better than what has already been said. That is beautiful. A labor of love that shows a passion for excellence.

Any guess on how much time you have into that sword? I cant even imagine with all the details and whatnot!

Highly artistic and superbly executed pieces such as this demonstrate what a great time it is to be a custom knife enthusiasts.
Don't know what I find more amazing; sword or sheath?

There's skill and then there's skill. Unbelievably good. So much to see but so perfectly balanced. Outstanding piece.

Holy crap, Man!!! I'm never building another sword again. I quit.

...Not really, but that is super. I have a lot to learn...

Hard for me to say time. I made 2 daggers and another sword at the same time and started with them last autumn. I have also finished some small knives in-between, so it´s really hard to say.

Amazing
Is the handle grip (i.e. 9.2cm = 3.6") comfy?
mohd

For my hand it works very well. The handle is design so the hand swells into it when you squeezes it really hard. With a small hand you would probably not get the support of the "back guard" and with a bigger hand it might be a bit tight.

I have been standing beside Peter at the Solingen knifeshow and have also been to two of his seminars; that guy can really get you hooked on swordmaking.

But I´m very aware of that if I strip all the damascus and details from my sword it would not be very impressive. Peter have spent more years perfecting a weapon then I have spent in knifemaking trying to make a perfect and balanced piece of art. If I would try to do what he does I would fail and I´m pretty sure he can not do what I do.

I think trying to make a weapon that's ready for the hard use of the battlefield for my own sake would be really cool, and it would be nice having something like that on the wall. It takes allot to get the maths right with the weight, balance and Nod-points. Maybe I will try some day!:)

There are few pieces that make my jaw drop literally.

This one made my jaw drop and followed aptly with a verbal expression of "Holy sh**!"
