New Woods Pack

My Blend in to everybody else packs, I have a North Face Recon & solaris 40 and a osprey kestral 38 . all great packs but the Osprey Kestral felt better packing around vs.the NF packs
my only other pack is the Junglas Back pack and I have not done much extensively with it as I have with the other being I owned them longer.

I love all 4 packs :)

I'd prolly go with the Kelty IMO

without a doubt of those choices the Kelty, though take a good hard look at what Mountainsmith has to offer-they're about on the same page as far as overall design, comfort and durability. My North Face Skareb 40 didn't hold a candle to my Mountainsmith Maverick. The Approach 3.0 may be what you're looking for.

Its been a long winter in Northern Michigan so I have had lots of time to put together a new woods pack. My new 1-2 day pack is a Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon II. Attached are pics. Seems OK, but havent had a chance to try it yet. For longer trips, I have the Maxpedition Vulture II (No pics). That thing has enough room for 5-6 day trips no problem.

For my BOB (even though I really dont agree with the concept), I have a Gregory UM-21 set up with all the things I think I would need. This is one of the nicest packs I have ever carried. The only reason I dont use it more for the woods is the "tactical" color and the Maxpedition has more accessory storage (i.e. small pouches, pencil slots, etc.

thank you for your honesty. nice to see someone who doesn't claim to know everything there is to know about everything

the founder of kifaru started mountainsmith first so i can see why they're also highly regarded as quality packs.

Thanks yall. Also I am open to any suggestions. I am not dead set on any of the packs I mentioned.

in that case, have you looked into kifaru?

I have a Blackhawk Strike Cyclone. Havent bene able to go hiking/camping with it though, just to haul some gear along for a rock climbing trip and a few hours in the woods. Its tough and has molle weebing al over it.
It does look a bit tacticool though, specialy since its in digicam. I just like the color :)

Their Maverick is without a doubt the best combination of design, comfort and durability I've seen for the civilian market. The Approach 3.0 isn't too different-instead of a top loading pullstring it's a zipper like a typical backpack, but it's got massive side pockets just like the Maverick and I believe it comes in at around 3200 cubic inches, just 400 shy of the Maverick. Look for ebay deals, you might be able to scoop one real cheap with a pair of their Rhyolite 6061 aluminum suspension hiking poles. The Kelty Map 3200 is around the same lines, a zipper instead of top loading but I think the overall organization is alot more conducive to multi-day hikes and easy on-the-trail access of pockets that one would associate with navigation and bushcraft than that 30 liter mentioned above. All of these options price out right at 100 dollars or just below, so they are very reasonable for what you get.

I am really liking my kelty redwing 3100. its pretty much my go to pack for everything. I did alot of research before i purchased and it seemed to be the best option for the money.

Go with the Eagle A-III without a doubt! Eagle makes first class products and that pack is a great piece of gear. Eagle also has an outstanding warranty with their stuff. Eagle also makes 2 side bags that can attach to sides of the pack (one on each side) to add a ton of storage if you need it. Plus you can get the bag in MOLLE or without it if it's not for you.

I have heard tons of good reviews on the Eagle A-III. When I get around to buying a new day pack, the A-III Molle will be at the top of the list.
