New Yari's have arrived

I ordered two of these(no serrations) last week from SMKW. $107.00 total for both.

Very sharp out of the box. Finish work on the knife seems a bit rough, but expected for a closeout production blade. Size is right between a big knife and a small knife. Handles feel nice.

Sheath is plastic doo-doo like so many others out there. Seems to hold the knife securely, but the release is not smooth at all and that is annoying. Any ideas ?

I'll be looking at some solutions to that soon. I have a friend at work that does saddle repair and custom leather work. I'm going to see if he'll make me something.

This weekend I'm going to be working on the farm with Dad-in-law and we'll see how they hold up.

Any advice for sharpening 154CM steel ? Supposedly this is good stuff.

TWO YARI'S FOR $107.00??!!
He shoots...HE SCORES!!!!

Very good score, Angus. I like the Yari. It's one of those knives I'll be hanging onto.
Your right. The sheath could be better.:(

edited to add:
I use diamonds or the Sharpmaker to keep the blades of 154CM sharp. I don't use any other manual method. If the blade needs re-beveling, I take it to Mr. Belt-grinder.;)

All the best,
Mike U.

If the sheath is kydex or some other heatformed material, stick the mouth of the sheath in boiling water and mold to taste....

When I called SMKW they had 114 of them left. That was on April 5th.
50 bucks each seemd to be a steal.

Gerber is d/cing this knife.

Do they always d/c the good ones?

I love my Yari,a very solid knife. The sheath is basically the same one that comes with the CS Kobun. Not the best but it will do.

Gerber discontinuing the Yari is just plain dumb.
Every manufacturer should have at least one knife that works and makes sense.
That leaves them with........... the multitool?

Are you sure GERBER is discontinued Yari?
I have looked at their web page just about minute ago and found Yari still listed there...

Nope, not sure.
I was reacting to Angus's post above.
Actually the first I've heard about it.
But discounted pricing could be an indication.
Guess we should snap up a couple extra if its true.

The new SMKW catalog show them being d/c'ed. That is why they are 50 bux each. COuld be an untruth, but for 50 dollars I can accept it.

I sharpen my Yari on a Spyderco Sharpmaker. Works for me. :) The 154CM seems to hold an edge decently well. Or maybe I'm just not using it hard enough, which is also a distinct possibility.

I have a (plain-edge) Yari coming from a trade, so I'll give a report on it when it arrives early this coming week.

I like my Yari 6910 (non-serrated), but hate the sheath. I need a more traditional leather sheath made for this. Anyone have any recommendations? Where here in Blade forums do the custom leather crafters hang out?

Thanks...

ps..I field dressed two whitetail deer with my yari this fall, which is the ultimate test of a good hunting knife for me.

I have sold a few Yari's. They seemed well designed, and the sheath is junk.

The 154cm is good for edge retention and easy to resharpen when necessary. It is one of my preferred steels in carrying knives at this time.

One of the customers, a good friend, got one and wanted the clip immediately sharpened. I took the primary edge tool I use for hard stuff and attempted four passes over the clip with it.
It didn't even dent it, no sharpened false edge on that knife. I was surprised it would not touch the steel. It's one tough blade on the spine of it for sure.

Shots, Here's info on a couple of guys that have worked with Busse and Swamp Rat blades in the past. You might ask if one of them would make you a sheath for your Yari.

A very highly regarded leather sheath maker is Kenny Rowe. Pictures & contact info at the following link (thanks to Gary Graley for the link):

Check local gun shows for leatherworkers in your area. There are usually makers of holsters, gun-belts, or accessories for cowboy action shooters or rendevous/reenactment buffs at such shows. Given that you want a "user" sheath that won't need to be fancy, a local maker may be able to make you a sturdy & durable sheath at a good price. Never hurts to ask, eh?

Great suggestions and I'm getting off my can following up right now. You probably know how it is, putting things off. Thanks!

Please tell me why the sheath is junk...

That reminded me to order mine, its on the way.

Personally I like the sheath. Simple,no frills, and I love it for IWB carry. I used to have a partially serrated version, but lost it in a trade for some ammo.

50 bucks plus shipping is a deal you cannot beat. Dealers cannot get them that cheap. Smokey has to be losing money on them.

Oh-and as far as ordering from SMKW,I talked to a young guy there, and he seemed very friendly and got my order in quickly and efficiently.

I've heard a few people complain about the sheath.
I think its just popular to do that.

To my mind its an excellent sheath. Its a straight up kydex sandwich with excellent build quality.
The only drawback I see is if you're not happy with the clip.
If you hate it cut it off. THe sheath has all the utility of a standard kydex sheath and can be fitted to a tekloc if that's your bag.
I'd personally prefer if the clip was switchable to ambi carry but I think its slim, unobtrusive and effective.
Personnally I find teklocs a little to bulky for my purposes. Got two of them I almost never use.

As far as price goes just try and find someone to make you a Kydex sheath for less than $30.
Looked at this way the Yari is a deal no-one should pass up at $50!

From a performance standpoint the sheath is not Kydex or Concealex but a plastic.

If you fall on that knife the point may end up in your rearend through the sheath.

The knife is great, the sheath is not something I would carry that in for any price.

If I were to buy one for myself, I'd have http://www.rivercitysheaths.com/ours.html make me a good one in Concealex.

Tell Mike Brownie sent you. You won't punch the tip of the blade through his sheaths.
