new york custom knife show

I don't know about that face paint idea, RR.

The problem with something like a BF special Native or a BF t-shirt is that most simply won't have one.

Here's a thought -- please let me know what everyone thinks of it. As much as I generally hate "name tags", maybe something like a label with a BF logo stuck somewhere on our persons would work. With permission, I could grab a BF logo & print up a batch of labels. As to distributing them, perhaps one of the makers/manufacturers would agree to hand them out on request. If nothing else, it could serve to generate additional traffic at their table. Any other thoughts on identifying each other?

Labels aside, I'm a big guy -- 6'2", 260 or so -- with gray hair & beard. I don't know what I'll be wearing but I will be carrying a black nylon briefcase with "About.com" on the flap. I'll probably also have a BF Native clipped somewhere.

Anyway, I'll ask Spark about using the logo. Let me know what you think of the idea and, if you'll be exhibiting, please let us know if you would be willing to be a distribution/rallying point.

The label idea is good. I think a better idea, for the future, would be for Spark/Mike/Us to have buttons made up for when we go to shows. A little publicity and positive ID for forumites.

I like the button idea for the future, Nick. A variation on that could be a downloadable graphic that members could print out & insert into a badge holder of some sorts.

In any case, Spark has given us permission to use a BF graphic. I have resized the following one to fit a 2" X 4" label.

I ran a test sheet & they look pretty good. All we need now is for an exhibitor to volunteer to be the label distribution point. Don't all volunteer at once now.

I may be goin' to hell in a bucket, Babe, but at least I'm enjoyin' the ride.

BTTT - Any exhibitor volunteers to hand out the labels?

Guys,
Phil Gibbs and I would be glad to hand out BF name tags at the show. Have Spark send some....

Will,
Thanks very much for the offer to distribute the labels but, as I annouced in a new thread, RJ Martin beat you to it. See you at the show.

Stop by RJ's table, say Hi, and pick up a label.

Hey, i'm planning on going Sat. i'm taking my wife and our daughter so they can have some fun in NYC. where can i find out the hours, schedule, and makers who are attending? can anyone help me out with that, cause we'll be taking a bus in from Pa. Location? anyone know if Ken Onion, JSP, and Sean Perkins may be there. if so, i better bring a little moolah..also, really important question here, maybe NYC residents can help me out: if i buy something, say JSP, and we go to the Empire State Bldg, will we be able to get in? what's the security like? i'd hate to have to give up a new toy unless they will hold it with a receipt? if i'm just carrying my regular BM 705 axis or something similar, would that be allright? haven't been there since the Twin Towers situation in the city, so could use some input there. Thanks very much. BCaffrey, great idea on the ID! hope to see a few of you on Sat. if you're there...

I'm pretty sure you won't get into the Twin Towers or Empire State Building with any kind of blade, metal detectors.

I wouldn't go into the Empire Stte Building with anything that I wouldn't sob over if it were lost.
I haven't been there, but I went to the Statue of Liberty last year and there were signs all over the place saying that there were metal detectors and warnings about carrying "weapons".
I had my Spyderco Police Model on me at the time and had walked about a mile away from my truck when I'd seen these warnings.
I figured "Scerw it", and went on the Ferry, then to The Lady With The Lamp.
No bells or whistles sounded and I returned without incident. I doubt that there are even metal detectors there. And this is the place where some nimrod hacked up a buncha folks with a machete a few years back.
(Sorry, you lunatics, but I don't know what brand the machete was)

Why did I post this story?
???
OH!
The moral is that had I been searched and they confiscated my Spydie, I would have been sad, but not devestated. If I'd been carrying my Sebenza, Crawford or Terzuola, I would've walked back to the truck.

Thank you for your time,
VG

Kelt,
Here are the hours for the show: Fri 12-8, Sat 10-6, Sun 10-3. As to exactly who is going to be there, it seems like a very well kept secret. I tried calling the show info phone numbers on & off for a couple of weeks but no one ever answered the phone.

Regarding security at tourist attractions, LD & VG gave the safest advice -- you're better off leaving that skean dhu at home.

I've had business at the WTC & you do have to pass through security -- no metal detectors for those going to office areas but I believe they do have them for the observation deck. I'm almost certain that the same holds true for the Empire State Building.

10- 4 Brian. There are definitely detectors/ magnometers present. How does one know? One way is when a building personnel walks up to an entrance with a portable wand type just when you thought you didn' t see any of the walk thru booth types. As a result of all the reported and possible future terrorists acts the city has been in a high state of alert for some time now. But you won' t learn of that from the media. Composites (NRGs, FFs, Emersons, BC Invisibles etc.) anyone??

As mentioned, I' ll spend Friday at the show but no time for molatifs. Have a nite detail soon after. See you all soon.

Vampire, Wasn't that machete incident on the Staten island ferry? As for as the warnings go I've heard that's getting to be pretty standard at national monuments and parks.

so, does that mean that i can't wear anything in, even the small BM 705? yeeaaacchh!!

Kelt I spent a week in NY in august and carried knives with me everywhere- Museums, shows, shopping, SUBWAY, boat rides but didn't
visit the national monuments. If I had planned to i would have just left the knives in the hotel room as i had planned to do if we got around to seeing them. I actually had no idea of restrictions at the time but figured it would be a safe bet that it would be risky.
