New York Show. Whos Going??

The show was smaller than the March show. They closed off part of the exhibition hall with a temporary wall. It's hard to notice the smaller size since it's still the same room as March's show, only with one end shorter. I can't tell by attendance if it had more or less collectors because I normally go on Friday, but this time I forgot so went Saturday. Plus, the November show doesn't quite have the same number of big guns as the March show. And with the change in location from last November's show, it's hard to judge the size of the crowd by how packed the room is. On this Saturday morning/afternoon, it looked like less people than last year's Friday afternoon at a poorer location. But again, different days so it's hard to judge. Only the makers and dealers can tell us how business went.

I haven't bought at this show for a few years. Talking to makers and dealers, they feel the trend has been that the November show is getting smaller and smaller. It hasn't helped that the November show kept being held at poorer locations, while the March show continued to be held at the Crowne Plaza. But things could look bad for the March show also, as I heard from one maker say he was told the upcoming March show will be held in the Meadowlands in NJ.

Can't really compare this show to the March show. Two completely different shows with different makers (a little overlap but not much). D'Lack bought this show from the previous owners in 02 or 03. Not the same as D'Lack's long running ECCKS, which started in the Meadowlands years ago.

Also can't blame the economy too much here either, this show has been going down hill for a few years now. I stopped doing it in 05 because it was too slow then.

Though I feel bad for the table holders I am not really going to complain. I always enjoy it because the two NY shows are my only chance do this aside from when I make it to Blade (which I never know if I'll be able to). All it takes is a 40 minute drive and I am in knife world/heavan.

I was really shocked at how small the room was this time. It seemed alot smaller then the show in the previous location. Also as grapevine said, they shortened the room. (tiny)

Was quite a small room, tight and crowded on Friday when I was there.

It was great to catch up with Wally Hayes, Jon Brand, and Herb Derr.

Got to spend time talking to Cliff Parker, Corrie Schoeman, Stephen Olszewski, Bud Nealy, and Kevin Casey (purchased a fighter from Kevin).

Had 2 of my Hanson's photographed (Don, coming your way from Jim when he's done) and will post 'em when I get 'em.

Local for me so it was okay.

Once again, as a certain dealer is apt to say: Some makers will sell out immediately, some will do OK, and some will blame the economy.

The show, for me, has had a BIG jump in photography sales. Are some makers more flush? Maybe. Bill Ruple had 13 knives just before the show he wanted to have me shoot as a group. After ONE HOUR he had only one left. ONE HOUR.

RJ Martin also sold anything he brought. And he had me shoot eight knives. Hmmmm....

Warren Osborne, Jay Hendrickson, Wally Hayes: SOLD OUT. Established makers do well. (Kevin Casey is a new maker and is pleased with his sales.)

The show has been moved from the past basement dungeon to the premier hotel: Crowne Plaza. Steve D'Lack reserved a smaller room, because he has a smaller crowd. It is, fortunately, held in the upper Grand Showroom, where another venue was originally scheduled and going to push the show to another room. That party cancelled and it allowed the Crowne Plaza to allow him to have the better room--only shortened to fit less tables.

The glass is half full from my vantage point. :p

Going back today with the room size in mind, yes, it is smaller.
Most of the folks I spoke to had a good show.
Still seemed like a good number of attendees filling the aisles.
I enjoyed it and won't complain.

It would be a real shame if this venue were moved to the Meadowlands.
A premier event should have a premier location.
Three thumbs up to The Crowne Plaza!

This was the 1st time I went on Sat to the show. I've gone almost every yr. since the early 90's (missed last yr.). I was very disappointed, maybe cause it was a Sat and not Fri but there seemed to be less makers. Even the dealers seemed to have less knives. The room looked very small. There was'nt that many people there either.

I was told they had the same number of tables as last year, but that it looked smaller because last year's show was in a smaller room. My impression was that a bunch of the older, established makers weren't there and perhaps they were replaced by younger people or dealers.
