Not to mention that the .22 has enough punch to enter the skull, but often not enough to exit, therefore you get the puree effect inside da bowl.

Levergun was my first thought, unless you can get a Kukri bayonet for the AR...
 
I would go with the Marlin lever action. Find a nice, safe spot, and pick your shots. If you run out of ammo before the last zombie is dead, then you have a nice club.
