New ZT0550 Thread !!!

I don't YET own this knfe but I own PLENTY of Kershaws and ZTs.

When have any of us ever heard of Kershaw NOT " making it right " ?

I understand it may be a let down with some of the current issues, but exercise a litlle patience and I know things will be fine.

(anyone upset by my post should throw their 0551 at me) that'll teach me to keep my mouth shut.....:)

I just picked mine up from the post office. The best news is that I got Ser. 0200! :D The lock up is solid. No blade play in any direction. I can see the liner has some red pitting on it--dare I say rust? The detent is too strong for the thumb stud to work for releasing the blade. The XM-18 I had was like that too so the flipper was a necessary feature. The blade is not centered. So there are a few things that should be sorted out for the 0550 but I'm glad they got this one out so quick.

It's all well and good to say that you can fix it with sand-paper. But you shouldn't have to. Like it or not, some people don't use every knife they buy, and if I buy a NIB knife from the manufacturer or a dealer, it should come in perfect condition, I shouldn't have to modify it.

Then return it, or sell it. It is what it is at this point. I never said it should be like that, but that is apparently how some came. At least with Kershaw they will fix it and make it right. I have a Spyderco I'm dealing with and they won't fix it because they don't have spare blades and it is sold out. Not everything is perfect on mass produced items so you deal with it the best you can or go without.

If all you have to worry about is some rust on a knife you bought, then life is pretty damn good right now.

I think I can safely say that KAI is very aware of the problems some of you have had with this most highly anticipated knife. And as houtex mentions I expect they will to live up to their reputation for outstanding customer service. Patience folks.

Indeed.
Did you actually buy this knife, or did you just feel a burning need to comment on it anyway?

Yeah I have 3 on the way. What does that have to do with anything? That doesn't change my opinion about any of this.

C'mon people, how about they get more than a day huh? Sweet jesus.

Regardless of what I think about the potential issues, the idea that they should release a statement or something inside of 24 hours is simply, expecting way too much.

So... the amount of rust seen in post #586 should be considered acceptable?

Where did I say any of it was acceptable? I just said I can see how it happened and that Kershaw will take care of it.

Edit: I'm still curious what would make people happy? What do you want Kershaw to say? What do you want them to do other than deal with the knives that people have a problem with through their warranty department?

I have a great amount of confidence in Kershaw as you all well know. I also know that this will all be worked out. Please be a little patient with everyone and remember all the positives, we all make mistakes, doesn't change my opinion of this great company. After I saw the first posts, I took apart two knives, one low number and one high number and found zero rust, so I know it is not on all of them. So again I ask for patience and some grace, they have worked hard for us , for a very long time, don't hang anybody out to dry, this will be resolved.

I was part of a group that ran across a similar issue with a metal topped strop base. No one cared that it had some surface rust, hell mine still does. Turns out the shipping (around the same time of year) and the difference in temperatures caused a bit of condensation.
Dave if you picked up the knives in person I'm willing to bet yours are perfect but some of the ones shipped, and depending where they go, could be the issue.

I'm not upset about the knife at all. I don't care about a little rust (if that is what it is) and I think once I flip the clip (personal preferance) and loosen the pivot an 1/8 to a 1/16 of a turn my issue with the off centered blade and too much detent tension will be taken care of. The snagging hangers on the g-10 should be relegated to a factory seconds blade but as a user is a meaningless cosmetic issue to me. I'm still excited about the 0550.

Hi Dave -

Excellent thought - and I agree.

My knives were picked up today - three fine Kershaw/ZT products.

I have not had my 0551 apart (#19), but the lockup is 40%, the blade looks perfect, the action is smooth, and I cannot see any rust in the liner with it assembled.

I have confidence in the company that it will make everyone satisfied with their purchase.

best regards -

Got mine yesterday and found the exact same things as mqqn.

Could not be more happy with the knife or the service.

+1:thumbup: Simply THEE BEST customer service I've ever experience with ANY production knife company.I'm not worried about a thing.

Hey guys! Has anyone gone out and used there 0551's yet? I would like to hear some feedback on that...how does it fit in the hand while doing heavy cutting? is there alot of fine tip control? things like that....that is what I designed this knife for...heavy use!! and its what ZT made it for...this early vs late lockup thing is really getting old....my personal XM-18 is at least 75%...it started out there 3 years ago and its still at 75%...personaly I dont like a real early lockup...to easy for you to inadvertanly unlock the knife...myself...I like 40-50% ...gives you a good solid lock that will last the life of the knife...but what the hell do I know :)....guys..go out and use the hell out of your 0551...then form your opinion and come back and let us know what you think...thats what I want to hear...dont follow what someone else thinks and then pile on...Everyone knows what I think about stories on my XM-18...I want to see and hear of hard use!

HI Rick -

You can count on it!

I did not buy this one as a knife to be "pampered".

I love it so far, all I did with it was cut up a little of the box it was shipped in.

With the large-ish handle and the stout blade, with the slight downward cant (which I love in a knife), it does allow a lot of control.

I also really like the jimping on the back/underside of the handle. My hand is wrapped just right around the handle, and it is very comfortable in my short experience with the design.

I will be playing with it and doing a little deadfall trap practice with it - I will post pictures and impressions after I have a little use on it.

I can't see it being anything but stout and up to any task based on my initial impressions.

best regards -

So far I'm really liking it, I've cut up about 20 boxes, a cut to size air conditioning filter and some of roofing tar paper, love the way it feels in hand , very solid, gives me slot of confidence that it's not gonna slip out when you get after it. As far as tip control, it's very good and controllable when only trying to cut the tape on a box, more later! Thanks for a great knife guys!
