Hello,

I just wrapped up this Tony Bose patterned Zulu Spear knife tonight. It is scaled down to 3-1/4" long, made of O1, has milled liners and uses a pivot bushing. I also made the 3/16" nickel silver bushings to make it a little stronger. I am very happy with how the ebony turned out and even happier it did not crack while peening.I held my breath. I still have a lot to learn and this knife fought me tooth and nail but it feels great when things finally come together.....

I will try to take better pics outside and post. I appreciate the feedback. It is not for sale.

That is really gorgeous. I absolutely love the ebony on it. Very nicely done.

I am envious of your talent Nathen! That is a really nice looking knife. Well done:thumbup:
Thank You for sharing.

Super nice work, Nathen!! I bet it feels good to complete such a beauty! A piece of real Treasure .

Or pin and blade, as the case may be? ;)

Unless you are down a tooth or nail or more, having finished the knife.

Excellent job!

I really like its size and lines. Thanks for posting this one up.

Looks great! A shield would be even better if you can bear to risk it.

I may be the only one but I disagree. That ebony is so sleek and beautiful I wouldn't want to try to enhance it with a shield. There aren't many knives that I would say that about.

No, I agree with you. I think it looks sleek without it. Nicely done!

Nice! That is a great looking knife. Anyone would be proud to own it I'm sure.

Good to see this knife. I cut out two zulu spears from my last little bit of A2. I think it's about the perfect EDC blade. I scaled mine down to about 3 1/2 ish as well. I was even planning on trying ebony for one if them! See how perfect your thread is?

Very nicely done, very sleek, as other posters have said (typed?). I wouldn't have attempted a shield on it either. Beautiful.

Also, can we see a picture of the spine with the knife open? Would you explain how you did the shadow pattern bushing/washer on the outside? I was thinking of milling a shallow pocket with an end mill, but I'd really like to hear how you did it.

Your pins look really good, very round. Did you mean for the choil to come out like that, or is it a "design feature"?

Thank you all for the kind comments. This is my third slipjoint althought it is the second one that works well. Mack, you are not the only one! I have a shield design but I really like the look of this piece of ebony and I did not want to take away from it.

Brian, I do not have a spine pic yet but here goes. I finished the each scale to about .140" thick. I then used the existing 3/32" pivot hole to align the 3/16" endmill. Then I sank the cutter .080" into the ebony. It cuts really nice with a sharp endmill. Repeat other side. I then drilled 3/16" nickel silver washers and cut them to .090-.100 in the lathe. Then I used a bushing tool (see Boseknives.com Pivot bushing page) to finish them almost flush with the scales.

The choil was not meant to be like that. That is part of my learning curve on what not to do next time......

Thank you again,
Nathan

Congrats, that's a beauty. I agree with others, that this is a perfect size for this pattern. I've got the Case/Bose version which I love, but it would get waaay more pocket time if it were 3.25".
