New Zulu Spear just finished tonight...

Thanks for explaining a bit more Nathan. Do you feel .140 is a good width for the covers, or do you wish they were thicker or thinner? I've 1/8" and 3/16" micarta and I'm not sure which one I'm going with yet.the other will likely have ebony, so I'm interested to hear your opinion.

Thank you all again. I have a lot of respect for the people on this forum. No nonsense and just focused on our style of knives.

Brian,
The thickness of .140" was dictated by the piece of ebony I had and how it had to be cut to get the best grain pattern. Once cut and both sides trued it ended up being that number. I love that you ask me for advise, but please keep in mind that I am a rookie at this stuff. The best advise I can give is to contact some of the true experts in the field. I learned some things that would take years to learn on my own and I know it will save wasted time and materials.....

Nathan

Thanks Nathan. I guess I didn't phrase my question well. Are you happy with the thickness, or do you wish it thinner or thicker?

Good tip about contacting some makers. I'm only about a 100 miles from Tony Bose himself, so hopefully after Blade I can get with him for a day.

Anyway, sorry to clutter your thread.

Hey Brian,

I think they turned out perfect. I will try to get a pic from the back so you can see. And that would be great to get a visit with Tony.

Rick,

I tried buffing a piece of scrap ebony and I did not like the way it turned out. So lots of sanding instead.

Thank you,

Nathan

I've made a few small things out of some ebony scrap that a friend gave me. i sanded it up to 800grit wet/dry paper using water as a lubricant, then a coat of linseed oil. This gave it a really nice silky feel to it.

Great looking knife!

Ric

Beautiful looking knife! I've undertaken MUCH less complicated projects and met with MUCH less success. Must feel awesome to be able to take responsibility for the creation of your own pocket-jewelry.

That looks great, and would feel good in hand, I imagine.

Keep up the awesome work!

I really like the looks of this one. Has a real warm feel. I'd be honoured to carry such a beauty and you should be really proud to have made something so beautiful. Keep up the good work, I think you will have a great career if you continue

Great job! The Zulu is a super pattern in my opinion. I have a few of them. I also like the scaled down size. Can you pinch the blade open with no problem?

Hello Ric. I drysanded to 2000 and very fine scotchbrite a few different times on the ebony then used lemon oil. On the blade and spring I went to 800 then green then gray scotchbrite.

Glocktenman, Yes you can pinch open this blade. It has a strong spring but you can still pinch it.

Thank you all,
Nathan
