Newb awl question

Hey! I'm about to stitch up my first sheath. I was thinking I'd use the nail in a drill press method for punching my holes. Umm, what kind of nail should I use?

Finish nail.

Very clean, bright finish nail, and it should be further sharpened and polished (like an ice pick).

I use a 3penny finish nail, don't forget to cut off the head.
