I have been lurking here for quite some time.Lots of awesome stuff on here. You guys do amazing work.I got bit by the knifemaking bug a while back and today finished up my first knife. It is an Alout blade from North Coast Knives.A little about me,I started woodworking about eight years ago,Then went to turning pens, bowls and other stuff. Now I want to give this a go.This is my very first knife and I am proud of it although it does have it's flaws. What do you guys think?Scales are African Blackwood with some sapwood.

Nice looking first effort!! Becareful--you have now started down a slipperly slope to a hopeless addiction. Welcome and enjoy.

Welcome!
Looks good. Did you do any polishing on the blade or is that how it came?

Nope,no polishing.Just cleaned it real good with some soft cloths and a little Meguiars wax.

Yes,African Blackwood.Very hard.See description below taken from another website.

African Blackwood grows in Africa, and most of our stock comes from Tanzania where it is called Mpingo. It mostly grows as a small bush, making harvest of good pieces very difficult. Sometimes it does grow in a tree form. It is a true rosewood. It is the classic wood of choice for bagpipes, clarinets and other musical instruments. The wood has a natural resistance to saliva (which ebony does not) and the grain is very fine. It is one of the world's finest turning woods and takes the finest details, making it also one of the best for ornamental turning. The specific gravity is between 1.0 and 1.2, with a dry weight around 78 pounds per cubic foot.

Hi Rdunn12,

I just reread your first post and you did say it was African BlackWood:(

RD, Gardendale up near B'ham? I'm about 10 miles north of Montgomery. Had a new bladesmith over yesterday and we forged some blades. Mabye we all could get together again in the near future. If you need anything holler at me.

Yep about 10 minutes north of Bham. Thanks Will,I would like to get together and learn something,as I know nothing.

Heck I know nothing too but I figure we can figure something out and it'll be all right as long as we don't catch fire and end up with something sharp and point :D

Do you plan on doing stock removal or forging?

Uhh umm I don't know which one is the most fun?:D I like playing with fire.:DI have been doing a lot of reading and learning about all the different aspects of knifemaking.(so I would'nt have to come on here and bug you guys with a bunch of questions) I like to figure things out for myself, then when I think I have it down and fail, I ask questions. So when are you gonna learn me something Will?Remember I am a woodworker, venturing into knife making.
