If anyone is interested in a newbie KITH I'll host it. I say newb but its really for anyone thats not quite sure they can produce a $200 knife for the real KITH.

same rules as the more experianced knife makers KITH w/ some exeptions/modifications

thanks for typing this up bladsmth it looks pretty solid. I hope you dont mind that I'm using it and making some mods.

Here is the plan:

2009 Christmas KITH

This thread is for all those interested in joining the 2009 NEWB KITH.
While it is usually called the Christmas KITH, it can be a Hanukkah KITH, or a Winter Solstice KITH, etc. The purpose is to make a knife and give it away to another newer knifemaker. In return you will get a knife from someone. No one will know who they are making the knife for until after the knife is finished, and no one will know who they will receive a knife from until it arrives in the mail.

SOME BASIC RULES :

The entrant must make, finish, the knife by or before December 1, 2009. Once finished, the maker can then post on the “2009 NEWBIE KITH - I’m Ready” thread. This thread will be posted starting October 1,2009. Photos of the completed knives can be posted on a separate “NEWBIE KITH Photos “ thread.
By December 15, 2009, I will make a shipping label and an envelope for each entrant, from those who have logged on the “NEWBIE I’M Ready” thread. I will have a third party randomly draw the labels and stick them in an envelope. The only examination of the names will be to assure no one is sent their own label.

If you are interested in becoming a part of this:

Post on this thread, “I’m In - I will make a knife by December 1,2009.”
Also, sent me an email to, o_ring616@hotmail.com . Give me you real name, your forum name, shipping address, contact phone, and email.

At this point, that is all you need to do. I will keep track of those who are interested in participating. I will send out monthly reminders by email to keep us all going. If you don’t finish the knife, or if there is a conflict of schedule, there is no problem this way - the recipients are only drawn from those who have completed their entry by Dec. 1, 2009.

About the knives:
The entry can be any knife or bladesmith related item. Fixed blade, folder, axe, hawk, sword, etc. The only requirement is that it be made by the submitter ( For simplicity, I will refer to it as “the knife“). The workmanship should be of the best quality that you are able to do. Levels will vary depending on ability and experience, but if you feel your knife will be a suitable gift, then by all means enter. If you are just starting, and still learning the basics, AWSOME!! The knife should be fully completed, and a sheath or case is advisable. You should provide all the pertinent information on the knife in a note to the recipient ( put this in the box). Outside services, such as Water Jet, Stabilization, and Heat Treatment are fine, but the workmanship on the knife should be yours.
The value level of the knife is up to you . It should be something that will be happily received by the new owner, but levels of value will vary, depending on the maker and their circumstances. It is a fun gift exchange, not a swap meet. It is not about what you get back for what you put in. Some knives will be worth $1, and others will be worth :Dnothing. some will be very nice and could have been put in the real KITH. I would suggest that you keep the knives in the general range of THE BEST KNIFE YOU CAN MAKE, No one is obligated to go beyond their means to enter this KITH. w/ all that being said your knife you are giving away should NOT be you first knife!

even though you may get a poor excuse for a mini pry bar we can't let the more experianced knife makers have all the fun!

PLEASE EVERYONE DO YOUR BEST!!!

Lets all have some fun and make some truly worthy knives.

I'm in. I have about 10 on the bench now so I imagine at least one will be a good one. Can you enter for more than one?

I think I'll have to be in on this thing :D That way I won't disappoint someone that is giving a knife worth $200+!

Thanks for being the starter of this!!!

Guy's you dont have to produce a $200.00 knife to be in the real KITH...that's just an upper limit! Look at most of the knives in the show your christmas knives thread... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=606937 Most were in the 50-75.00 range. Some below, some more...

feel free to make a 50.00 dollar knife. the point is the sharing and the getting to know your fellow forumites.:D

GET IN ON IT!

it says right in it:

"I would suggest that you keep the knives in the general range of $200 in value"

I think if you make a $50 knife you should be in this KITH and leave the other for more experience makers.

This is a good, "get your feet wet", KITH.

While the main KITH will have knives from $75 to $200+, the value isn't really the issue. It is all for good fun and to encourage making and exchanging knives.

One option is to sign on to both KITH threads. If your knife comes out real nice, you can use it for the main KITH by sending the, "My knife is finished, and ready to ship" note to the KITH DONE thread when it is up. If it isn't all you hoped it would be, no sweat, just post that it is ready on the newbie KITH thread. If it is a total disaster, and you will never let anyone see it. Just don't post that it is ready on either thread.
Remember, you are not obligated to supply a knife until the knife is done and you post the "I'm Ready" note.

Final note- It is not hard to make a knife worth over $100. Nearly all handmade knives fall in that range and above. By the time you add a sheath or carrying case, the value gets even better. I'll bet Bill Moran didn't figure his first knife was worth a dime ( Actually, He told me he didn't think it was worth anything.), but what would it fetch today.....more than five figures, I'm sure.
Now, go make some knives.

i think I'm gonna try this... if i succeed great if not oh well.

good idea Stacy about signing up for both!

Just to make it clear, I'm not suggesting anyone do both KITHs. I am suggesting that if you aren't sure at which level your knife will be, sign up for both, and submit it to the KITH that most fits the final outcome. No one should make two kith knives.
Stacy

Sorry if I caused confusion. As Stacy said NO ONE should make 2 knives for the KITH’s. Let’s focus on making the absolute best knives we can. If you are sure they are worthy of the real KITH by all means enter them in the “I’m ready KITH ” thread. If you’re not 100% enter them into the “I’m ready newb KITH thread”. Why one one knife? I don’t want decent makers entering B class/ “good enough” knives in the newb KITH. I want less experienced makers to try they’re hardest making a knife they put a lot of effort into only to get one back knowing that person has done the same.

Beochie,
I dont think anyone would enter a B class knife. Im sure you meant no disrespect or offense, and I didnt take it that way at all.

I want less experienced makers to try they’re hardest making a knife they put a lot of effort into only to get one back knowing that person has done the same.

Very well put, I just didnt think about it this way. I can respect what it is you are doing and I think it is a great idea. With that being said please withdraw my name from this one.

Good luck, Im sure this will turn out really well. And dont forget we want to see lots of pics!
