newb looking for a grinder

Welcome! If you are interested in a kmg price ranged grinder, I would look at this BEE, http://www.knifemaker.ca/home.php?cat=254. Similar to the Wilton Square wheel. I am not sure about the craigslist grinder, It looks well made, but you may want to be able to have a vertical platen and the 3 wheel grinders generally have better tracking. Seems like a fine machine though.
For grinding you may want a beefier grinder than that delta, looks good for handles though.
The coote, suremak, bader, burrking, grizzly and a few more are other options.

Bee Metal Products build a knife specific belt sander and they are located in Woodstock. About an hour from Toronto. They are expensive, but I have heard they are go grinders. The delta grinder is not a bad machine, but some thing you would use the make a lot of knives with.

If you are serious about getting a grinder in the KMG range than I would suggest finding someone across the border to ship the KNG to and go pick it up. You are not that far from the border and having a KMG myself I greatly recommend it. This has nothing to do with the Canadian products mind you. They might be great I just have no experience with them.

I have the Delta. I bought in an attempt to upgrade from my 1 x 30. I ended up not linking the delta and stayed with the 1 x 30. Eventually I got a KMG and rarely use the 1 x 30 or the delta anymore. Actually, my delta just sits on a shelf and is never used.

Recently there was another post from a forumite (hellgap?) in a similar situation. Looks to me like SUREMAK makes a grinder somewhat similar in design to the KMG. I think that I have photos stored away somewhere in my email archives. Shoot me an email/PM and I'd be happy to forward them.

The suremak is actually built about 10 mins away from my house, but I have never spoken with the owner. I have seen one though, and it is a nice machine.

I have the Delta. It's ok, but it can cause you more work if you're not careful. My first blade, I tried to grind as much as possible w/ the Delta, and ended up taking TOO much off. Now I'm correcting my mistakes with sandpaper.

I've got a Suremak, and I can testify to the quality of Knut's design. Really slick machining, easy adjustment/belt changes, no tracking problems, ever. It's about the same cost as a KMG (though with the exchange it's probably a bit cheaper right now) but probably a bit easier to get your hands on. It's done almost everything I could ask it to do.

That said, if you know you'll want all the attachments for the KMG (rotary platen, multiple small wheels) it's probably a good bet to find someone to ship one to you.

In either case, prepare yourself for the setup: if you don't know anything about the wiring in your shop, find out. If you have any questions, we'll be happy to answer them!
(Personally, I bought a refurbished 2HP 3-phase motor from ebay and a VFC to run it; total cost was ~$300 over and above the grinder. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.)

Greetings,
I have the 2 Wheel Suremak grinder also. The 2 wheel Suremak grinder I purchased was only $600.00 cnd. Much cheaper then the KMG. I think it is well worth every penny, but highly recommend a variable speed motor.

I heard that Knut (the owner of Suremak) is selling 3 wheel grinders now, much like the KMG and Bader.

Beaumont Metal Works is in Columbus, Ohio, about 3 hours south of Detroit. . .

yah but the tax at the border will kill me and as well as the price of the suremak is attractive.

The BEE grinder is an industrial quality grinder. If you are looking for a price deal, it is probably not for you, even though it is priced in Canadian dollars (right now, about a 25% difference).

Maybe you should be looking at the Suremak 3 wheel for a price break.

Rob!
