Newb looking for some advice

I can't improve on anything Rockstar has mentioned, other than to say that for many here, a Buck 110 was/is the 'gateway drug' that got us started.

I've found the Kershaw Leek (eg: 1660G10 - polished or textured), to be an excellent value (s30V steel) for around 77 dollars. It is AO, but the spring can be removed and used conventionally. Office friendly. Simple, classy design. Not very "tactical" looking. The size and shape work well with slacks or suit.

As a guy who also works in an office, I understand your concern about "weapon looking" knives. Considering the $50-$75 price point, from Benchmade I suggest one of the many Griptilian / Mini Griptilian models, you really can't go wrong with them. From Kershaw go with the Blur line. I love and own Spydercos, but I don't carry any of them to the office because the big round hole does make them look more sinister to the average non-knife folks.

Edit: oops, I miss the 3" requirement. No Blur then, maybe Kershaw Leek. The leek is nice, but the very pointy shape might get you some dirty look. I say Mini Griptilian should serve you fine.

I agree with Mini-Grip recommendation, great knife. If you really want to tone down the sinister look, you might consider one of the colored grips (eg: blue or yellow...or pink, if you want to get some funny looks :-)

But, I still like the Leek. If someone asks you about the pointy tip, then tell them it is necessary for opening letters.

I'm not worried about people who ask, because then I can explain to them nicely and properly. The people I worry about don't ask; they go straight to HR or my boss to complain that I carry a "weapon".

Check the exchange forums here on www.bladeforums.com

You can find something very nice for $50-$75. If you don't like Spyderco, Kershaw has many good offerings in that price range, including the Leek and Junkyard Dog.

Crud, I'm really bad in the reading comprehension department these days, I totally missed the part where you said you worked on Wall St. Sorry.

NY state prohibits "gravity knife". NYPD considers any locking knife that you can open with a wrist flick as gravity knife. What's the catch? Most knives won't open with just a wrist flick if you hold the handle, but most will open if you hold the blade. Pretty much every other police department test only the handle hold; NYPD tests the blade hold.

In short, that makes pretty much all locking knives illegal in NYC (your mini grip included), because NYPD's test put them in the "gravity knife" category. They WILL prosecute too. If you want to be safe, buy a non-locking knife.

Ironically in the non-locking (or slipjoint) knife category, your best bet is actually spyderco. They have many non-locking knives designed to comply with these kinds of law. I recommend Spyderco Bob T. Yes, it has the hole, but overall the look is classy and conservative enough that you are likely to get away with it. It's $25 over your budget, but that's a very small price to pay to avoid prosecution.

a case slim lock is a perfect gentlemans pocket folder...there is no pocket clip. but it is built to sit perfectly in the pocket..case knifes are built like a piece or jewelery..the finish is flawless.. another choice is a case stag handled mini copperlock...smoothe as silk in your pocket and un rivaled quality...I wear a work uniform during the week..at that time I carry a tactical knife, with a pocket clip..outside of work, with dress pants I carry a case brand trapper, stag handle...vintage 1970...its like an old friend

benchmade 520 and 710 sound like they would be a good fit for your needs.

I'd say pick up a few below $100 knives that you are willing to use instead of shelling out for the collectors/safe queens

also there are trade forums here where you can swap your gear or tools etc for knives. I've found some good stuff lately.

A number of things come to mind:

--SAK one-handed knives. Some, like the Sentinel, can be had with a clip as well. Very convenient, a great knife ata great price. They have a liner lock, but a SAK is the most non-threatening knife there is. If the lock is a problem, get a nonlocking SAK slipjoint with classy, alox handles.

--Pyderco UKPK. No lock, and a great handling knife.

--Any of the elegant slipjoints from Case. Old fashioned gentleman's knife. If you want something a little nicer, take a look at the Trapperlock. It has the ease of one handed opening, and is quite the looker, but it does have a lock.
