Hi there forgive me if this is a dumb question but while profiling and grinding a blade from un heat treated steel on a belt grinder do I need to keep the metal from getting too hot? or is this only after HT that it would matter?

No worrys with steel that hasn't been heat treated yet. Grind to you're heart's content! After heat treating, getting it too hot with ruin the temper for sure. I think most makers would recomend a normalizing treatment after really rough grinding to relieve some of the stress it can cause. I would recomend taking a nice hot bath!:D

What R.C.Reichert says. But after shaping the steel you need to normalize it for sure, your grinding work put some stress in steel. You remove the stress by normalizing, it will prevent/minimize the deformation possibility at HT... (I guess you know that but the only thing to worry about is that stress prior to HT)
Good luck with your first knife...
