Hey Guys,

Here's my newb questions for the day.

1. Why a single cut file vs. a cross cut file? They both shave steel right? Is it because the cuts are deeper with the cross cut and more difficult to sand out?

2. I'm hoping to get my Grizzly 2x72 for Christmas so I'm looking to move into the stock removal stage. What width and thickness of steel do you recommend for different knife types?

I'm assuming raw steel for a bowie would be thicker than say a hunter - but i'm not positive - remember I'm new :).

Well, it depends what you want the file to do.
If you are draw filing, you want a bastard. Rough filing can be done with a double cut. Finish filing with a single cut.....etc.
