First of all thank you in advance for any and all advice. I've learned a lot just from reading this forum.

My sum total knife experience has been using them, sharpening them (KME sharpening system) and just recently, I put a handle on a Helle Blade. So I'm a complete Newbie. I have some metal working experience from years of restoring old cars for a hobby but that's about it.

What I would like to do is purchase a Damascus blank in the feather pattern from a domestic source. Cut, grind, file, sand, etc a knife with a total length of about 7", and 2 1/2 - 3" of blade. It would be on same lines as a drop point hunter but maybe a little more slender? Drill it for mosaic pins and Thong Tube. Maybe some file work on the spine? Then send it off to someone capable and reputable for Heat treating. Then epoxy on and shape the scales, etc.

My question is, is this doable for a newbie with a hacksaw, Bench Grinder, 3x36 belt sander, drill press, 4 1/2" Angle Grinder, and oxy/actelene torch?

Am I jumping into the deep end of the pool too fast?

I've been looking for a feather damascus blade already shaped and HT but I cant find the exact profile I want or I have trouble getting people to respond to my request.

It would be a gift for my wife and the feather pattern is because the brand on her horses is a feather. Then I need to make or purchase a leather horizontal sheath for the small of her back for when she rides.

You can find regular damascus blades that are ready to finish, but as far as I know you won't ever find one in feather damascus. Also, feather damascus is usually on larger blades, because it is a larger pattern.

Try Alabama Damascus. They have pre-made blades in a huge variety of shapes. You can then do as much or as little sanding as desired, and add the handle.

Good Point on the size of the blade for the feather pattern. It won't be as visible / recognizable on a 3/4 - 1" wide blade. I didn't think of that.
Thanks.

There used to be a couple of American Damascus blade makers on ebay (snakeriverknives and 2fingerknives) that made pretty good quality blades. I don't know if they are still there but it would not hurt to look.
