Hi
I was visiting a southern Gulf island and stumbled across this metal object...
6221022717.html

It weighs about 300lbs and I was wondering if I could use this as a anvil?

Any ideas as to its origin and usefulness?

Thanks for helping!

I think it is marked as sold on the ad? If not I still would not recommend it due to not knowing what type of steel it is. If you do get it you could use S7 or another shock resistant steel as a face to have more control over how the metal reacts under a hammer imo...

Its hard to estimate size & scale, But that thing appears a top die of a dropforge. Perhaps a drop hammer of somekind anyway.
As you say 300 pounds and if its steel, it can be a great makeshift anvil.
It would be interesting to see what its bottom surface looks like.
Btw, awesome scrapheap workshop. Looks remarkably familiar...
Dunno why excepting I am a Lopez Guy... :)

To quote a blacksmith I fallow on YouTube. If a hardened anvil makes a diffrence when forging then your steel is not hot enough. Really the only thing a hardened steel anvil does for you is last longer. I have talked to a few full time blacksmiths who say hardness is not what's important, it's mass that matters. Now I'm not saying I don't want a hard steel surface to forge on but according to others much more knowable then I, hardness improving forging is and I quote horse pucky. I will dig up the video and post a link. I hope it does not get any ones nickers in a twist.
