Newbie asks about bootknives

A boot knife is probably a weapon of last resort. It may provide you with a sense of confidence but that can get you in trouble. Still, being prepared is the only way! Find one that is comfortable with a good retaining system so that it doesn't get lost in the heat of things (fighting, running...), has a lanyard hole, darkened blade, kydex or similiar sheath material with a wide mouth. Double-edged or with a marking indicator for the top side. At night or under other conditions, you may not have time to determine the "sweet side" of your blade. Having said that, avoid geographic locations where turkeys hangout, get yourself a concealed weapons permit, and pray you never will be involved in an "incident."

I have carried a Gerber boot knife off-and-on since 1971 and every time I was in a situation involving violence, the boot knife was always a backup...never my primary weapon. I still have that knife, it was one of four sent to my Special Forces unit-- C/2/12th(Abn).

Good luck and avoid turkeys

Just have to say thanks, everyone. I really appreciate that you're all sharing your experience and insight. It's very helpful as I explore what's available and what might be right for me.

Since you do have sword training, a cane would be very useful to you as a first line of defence, a plain hickory stick can break bones (not to mention balls).
I recommend against a dagger. I don't know the legal situation where you are but If you do get into a situation and you have to use your knife, having a dagger makes it look as if you were out looking for trouble and an excuse to use your 'evil' knife. I think a folding knife with a medium to large blade, that can be deployed quickly from the front pocket, with a sharp point would be better and more useful in your daily life.
