newbie Baitcast questions

What outfit did you get? Nobody really talked brands, but just curious what route you went.

I use a spining rod & reel for trout and small mouth bass. I have a couple of sizes depending on the water and the intended fish. I typically use 4 > 6 lb test line most of the time.

I purchased a bait casting rod & reel a couple of years ago and have not used it much. But basically if I want to use 12-14 lb test line, I use the bait casting outfit. It is very hard to make the switch to a bait casting rod when you have fished spinning rigs for many years. I am not very accurate with my casts with the bait casting rod, so I tend to fish open water more with it.

I never got good with my first casting reel until I left the spinning rod home.
Did that for a summer and never looked back.

Also curious on what was purchased :)

I got a 7 ft med action rod on sale at cabelas and a shimano caenan reel, taken it out twice works great. I can see why every one recomends tissing crankbaits with them. Thanks for the advice advice everyone.

The biggest problem I had with the Baitcaster was learning how much pressure to exert on the reel as it was cast. Plus it helps to put in the extra time to adjust the magnets/ friction points for the specific bait you are using. Once everything including the bait is attached to the line, if you let off the line release, it should just just fall slowly and gently to the floor.
There are some nice Abu Garcia reels that can be found for a decent price.

Not a bad first combo. It is a lot like knives, you will want more! Shimano, Daiwa, and Abu Garcia are my top choices. Do not know that specific reel, but it should serve you well. I think you will be happy you got a 7' instead of something shorter also.
