Brand new guy here with a buying question... My wife is currently employed by a big box store, but that will be ending soon. While she is employed there, she can get knives from benchmade, spyderco and sog for 50-60% off. Currently, with the exception of a Leatherman, I own no knives of any style. Let's say you had $500 to invest, so that means roughly $1000 in knives (at msrp) with these 3 manufacturers. I would like a good mix of fixed blade and folding.

What models would you buy? The sog demo seems like a versatile large fixed blade, and spyderco seems to have a ton of folding blade options, while Benchmade seems to have the best quality.

What are you looking for? What type of knives, sizes etc. Because I think that is extremely important. Are you asking for people favourite models by the manufactures?

Unfortunately, I do not have a favorite style yet, as I mentioned, I only have the one Leatherman, so I am looking to cover a wide breadth of styles with this investment. I only want good quality tools, but besides that I have no idea if I would prefer a small sheathed blade or a folder for everyday use. I don't know if the Bowie style or one of the other large fixed styles would be best. So, any advice, whether it be a favorite from one of the manufacturers or a bunch of favorites would be appreciated.

Of the three companies, and the available discount, I'd go with spyderco and benchmade. This is all personal preference. I don't own fixed blades by any of the companies listed. I prefer custom fixed blades... just because. I'm in construction, and of all the blades I own by both spyderco and Benchmade, I carry a Benchmade full size griptilian (551), spyderco endura and sometimes a spyderco manix. I think you would be happy with any offering by either company.

Are you looking at this as a 'what should I buy to make out with the most money end the end as I plan to sell it all' standpoint or investment in terms of actual usage/utility?

Definitely usage/utility. If something sits forever after purchasing because I eventually see no practical use for it for me then it might be sold. In general though, the plan would be to keep and use them.

I would actually start with buying the griptilian from benchmade and the endure fromcspyderco. They are often considered "competitors" for that sized knife, but they are vastly different and it will give you a good representation of what both companies offer.

Some that I like from those brands:

Spyderco: Caly3 CF, Delica4 FFG, Endura4 FFG, Dragonfly, Ladybug, PM2, Gayle Bradley 2
Benchmade: Mini-Griptilian, Griptilian, 940, Mini-Barrage, 707, Valet (haven't tried those last 2, but both look like they'd fit my EDC preferences well)
SOG: Flash 1, Mini-Aegis

The Delica4 is one of my all-time favorite EDC knives and was only more recently (within the last couple of years) surpassed by the Caly3 CF. While I prefer the Ritter blades on the Griptilians, the standard drop point or sheepsfoot ones are also great. And now that they come in 20CV steel and G10 handles, the Griptilians are that much better. The SOGs are small, remarkably light, and carry very discretely.

Of the three you mentioned, Spyderco is the only one I'd buy from. I've had SOGs and I prefer Spyderco. If the other company really is BenchMARK and not BenchMADE, I'd still stick to Spyderco. I've seen a few Benchmark knives and I don't remember being impressed by them. Spyderco's Delica and Endura models are very good every day, all around folders. Just depends on the size you want.

OTOH, if your OP has a typo and you're really talking about Benchmade, then anything you happen to like from them should be a good buy.

Sorry about the confusion, autocorrect got me in the original post (now edited). It is Benchmade that is available to me.

50~60% off MSRP?

These brands already sell online at ~40% off MSRP so it's not like you're going to 'double' your investment.

Having said that, you really can't miss with any of the hi-end models from Spyderco or Benchmade.

Oh ... and WELCOME!

If they have Zero Tolerance, they'd be one to look at also. I'm not super impressed with most SOG's, but it's hard to go wrong with most Benchmade's or Spyerco's.

Of the Spyders, one must have I think is the PM2 (Paramilitary 2). Obviously the Grip's on the BM side are probably the most talked about, but I've never cared for them. I think there are just too many others in the lineup that have more class in the looks department....but they are most definitely very functional.

I just noticed this page has no pics...so here are some Spyder's and ZT's. Sorry, I don't have BM pics handy. And I currently don't own any SOG.
