Hey all,

I am a newbie from Sydney Australia although I have been into Flashlights and a member over at CPF for a while have just turned my interest in knives.

I do not know much about them although i went into the local gunshop to find most knives at 60us and up.

I decided to look around on ebay and found someone to buy a few off so i grabbed 10 for about 20Us each. (The uzi was 35us)

1.CRKT Alaska Carcajou Hunter Knife With 2 Sheaths B/ NEW
2.Gerber Revolt Knife, Black Tanto Combo, "Brand New"
3.Smith & Wesson Homeland Security Knife, Camo, Mint Box
4.Smith & Wesson SW-3500 SPECIAL TACTICAL SWAT KNIFE
5.Smith & Wesson Extreme Ops BlackTanto Blade Knife "MIB"
6.Smith & Wesson Extreme Ops Silver Aluminum Knife MiB
7.SNAP ON TOOLS "Large Hunting Knife Black With Logo" NEW
8.Uzi Defender Linerlock Folding Knife BRAND NEW in CASE
9.Gerber® Ridge Knife, Black Outdoor Survival Knife MiB

I think i did ok for the price.

Any hints tips or suggestions?

the link to the ebay shop is http://search.ebay.com.au/_W0QQsassZtesswagQQhtZ-1

If on the off chance this is not spam for a E-bay seller, I think you should get over quantity and develop a taste for quality.

well once you get into knives it will be more about the quality than the quantity. For 200 i think you would have been better served to buy 1 nice knife. Getting an emerson folder for example which is in that rice range or a spyderco manix would really show you good knives. Fixed blades ranger knives and swamprat knives. Once you get a taste of higher end knives youll never want to go back.

Good luck and welcome to BF enjoy your stay :)

Gun shops in Australia ??? I'll be damned.

If you like low cost , quality blades check out the Byrd line from Spyderco.
Also CRKT has many knives in a nice price range.
Low cost , traditional blades ? Check out Mora and Opinel.

lextsy, I think I can safely say that if you had spent some time here before spending your money, you wouldn't have bought the stuff you bought. I don't think the knives you bought are bad. I couldn't tell you if the price was right or not, but at best you have $200 worth of mediocre knives.

Let me put it to you this way would you want 10 flashlights for $200? I'm sure you could find 100 flashlights for $200 somewhere, but is this what you want for the basis for your collection?

There certainly is a place for $20 knives, some are decent for the money. They make good beaters and dirty-work knives. But I'm not sure anybody really needs 9 or 10 $20 knives. It may have been better to get one or two $20 knives and a nice Spyderco Military, BM 710 or Al Mar SERE 2000. If nothing else, it would illustrate how a $100-$150 knife is different from a $20 knife. Then you could decide if that difference is worth it to you. If you felt like sticking to the $20 knives you would have no problem at all trading or selling the higher-quality knife.

Forget the rest. You got a Snap On knife that is made out of really good tool steel which should be M-2 and maybe M-50 if you are real lucky. It all comes down to price. The tang should also show all around the handle making it a full tang.

I dunno... This is the only Snap On knife I could find in a quick search, looks like a cheap Strider rip-off. It looks like it would be in the price range that lextsy was shopping in. Maybe there are other knives that Snap On makes that are better, but they would definitely be in a much higher price range.

I know their tools are top notch, but this knife seems to be a made in China cheapie and for all we know the real Snap On tools has no connection whatsoever to this knife.

Hi all,

Thanks for the great replies. As a newbie though I guess i have to learn about the different qualities. Some comments were bordering on "this guy is an idiot" kind of thing but please remember I have no knowledge of anything about these really.

As for flashlights I do only touch the finest including Surefire M6, L7 some streamlights, pelicans and so on.

Initially I did go into one the gun shop in the city and saw the same knives (gerber and smith and wesson and buck) and I assumed these were middle to good range knives all going for 100us and up so when I saw the same knives on ebay for about 30 each I jumped on it.

I am aware these aren't top quality as they are being sold so cheap but I can only guess your tastes are more refined than most peoples.

Anyway I appreciate the mention of all these never heard of brands and i doubt if any of these would even come into australia and if they did it would be at an inflated price.

My surefire m6 cost about 300us shipped from the states however local sellers if any sell for 800us.

Anyway I opened them all up and am pretty happy with the quality for now.
The gerber knives feel nice and I did buy 1 CRKT knive which felt good also.

I would be happy to buy 1 nice $150us folding knive also so i will go and search and see what i can find

lextsy, I hope you weren't offended by any comments here, I don't think anybody meant to insult you. Now that you're here (and I hope you plan to stay) you will find a wealth of information that will help you in future purchases. Believe me, your experience starting out is the same as many people here, we all have a few lower-quality knives we started out with. :D

lextsy, I certainly wasn't trying to insult you or your choices. I really don't know enough about them. My feeling was that if you had done a little research here you may have come up with some different choices, that's all.

My comments about flashlights was just to put it into perspective between collecting knives and flashlights.

Hiya thats cool, I am happy with my purchases, I need to know what the cheaper ones are like before i can appreciate the best anyway.

Lexsty, I sharpened and tuned a S&W Extreme Ops for a friend at work thats identical to yours. Turned out pretty nice for a tool box knife, once I applied loctite to all the screws, and adjusted the pivot. Took a nice edge too, not sure how it will hold it though, and the Nylon washers probably wont last too long. Do that to yours and use it as a standard to beat next time you shop. Just a helpful hint. Welcome to the forum.
