G'day y'all

I've been learning a bit about custom filework and it really appeals. I've been trying some stuff out here and there, and long story short I decided to post a couple pics of 2 knives I've done some work on.

There's a few obvious stuff ups here and there where I've slipped or misjudged something, but that sort of thing should happen less often with practise. At the moment I'm using metal files and doing everything by hand, even holding the damn knife while filing (bench clamp is on the xmas wishlist). Anyhoo, any comments, thoughts, critisisms or praises would be welcome. Ignore the quality of the knives, they're el cheapos :D

WOW:eek:
Doing it by hand without the use of a vise/clamp!?! That is some mighty fine work there! Good job:thumbup: Looks great IMHO!

Beautiful work Soulsmith,

I wish I could do that. I'd have to take the darn knives apart - heck that's a job in itself!

Thanx for all the positive comments, it's good to know that what I'm doing so far looks as good to others as it seems to look to me lol

@cziv Oh I did have to take both knives apart to do that stuff. Fortunatelly both knives had simple phillips head screws holding them together, there's no way I'd attempt to take apart and put back together a knife held together with rivets :-P

Hey that looks AMAZING!

I've been messing around with some basic file work too, but nothing that complicated.

-I'd love to see some side view photos of those blades, and also some shots of the type of files you use to get the differing results... if that's possible?

Keep up the great work!

Outstanding. If you decide to do it seriously for others you may want invest in a Foredom tool. That will really speed up the process. You do excellent work. thanks for sharing.

Hey partner, you're just one step away from firearms engraving.

Very nice work...thanks for sharing.

Hi Soulsmith -

Great work, mate!

Thanks for the pics.

best regards -

Very Nice Work! I tried a little filework and it came out so so. I have two full sets of Starlite Diamond needle files I never use now...

@BryFry - I'll see what I can do about side view pics for visual reference, and a pic of my tools if I can. That's a pic of my files, not :jerkit: lol

@knifeoutlet - I priced a couple electric doohickies, but I've yet to legitimise to myself the AUS$100 or so it would cost. Would leeerv to try some filework with one though :D

@cdhumiston - I googled starlite diamond needle files and I tell you what, I wish I had some of those. Fiancee is getting me some diamond files for xmas but I still have to hit up the hardware store and see if they have exactly what I want.

Thanx again for all the positive feedback guys :o

I understand. I suggested it in the event you decide to do it professionally. Your work is certainly good enough to do so. A Foredom tool - Way over $100 here - is what most knifemakers use to do file work professionally. It makes relatively quick work of the job.
