Everyone says not to let a blade get too hot when grinding.

I have limited skill doing this yet, and have let the tip get too hot and turn blue.

I am using a 6" bench grinder and the material is an annealed Nicholson file.

Since I haven't done any hardening or heat treating yet, will this still be ok? or have I ruined any chance of the tip being ok?

Thanks for any help.

If the blade will be heat treated, the overheating during grinding is not a big issue for a knife. You should run a series of normalization before hardening, this operation will minimize or diminish the effects of grinding... I'm not experienced in carbon steel treatments but if you search this forum (google search : "site:bladeforums.com" "keyword") you'll find enormous info on this subject...

You have not hurt a thing, just be sure and normalize it before heat treat.

Thanks for the replies. How many times should I normalize? Is once enough.

I really am enjoying this so far.

I see how people become hooked.

Thanks.
