Hi, I'm an extreme newbie, still working on getting things set up for my shop. I don't currently have a heat treat oven, and will likely not be able to afford one for awhile. What would be the best way to heat treat until I can obtain an oven? Thank you in advance.

dependig on the steel you plan on usig and what other tools you have
by forge is tricky and then you hav eto temper in some sort of oven
use high alloy steel jsut send it off to peters and know when you get it back it will be right

Welcome to Shop Talk. Fill out your profile so we can know a bit about you as well as where you are.

The stickys has good info on basic HT for carbon steels. Kevin Cashen's "Working with Three Steels" is really good. The "File Knife" info is full of backyard HT ideas.

To search for past threads on HT methods, use the custom search engine, which is also in the stickys.

Thank you. You may get a little annoyed with me, but what are the stickys? I'm sorry, but I'm new here. I will be sure to fill out my profile some more when I get the chance.
