Newbie here with a question...

Hey everyone. My name is Rick and I am new to the forum. I have been in law enforcement for over 10 years now and am not really a total knife freak but would like to gain knowledge, especially if I am going to carry one. Okay, on to my question:

I recently have been accepted into our department's SWAT team and in the orientation we attended, our LT. suggested we purchase a fixed blade knife for multi-purpose use such as prying things, cutting things and of course as a last result self defense item. I don't really want to spend over $100 including the sheath but I do not want to get something that is a cheap peice of crap that will bend or break on it's first operation.

Being the newbie that I am, I was thinking of something in all black that sort of looks cool (I hope I didn't make too many people cringe with that last part...rolling your eyes is okay) and something with a plastic sheath that will fit on my 2" nylon belt or drop leg holster.

Help a newbie out, thanks in advanced and I am glad to be here.

Here is what many guys in the military use every day. It is the M9 knife-bayonet.

:thumbdn: Makes a marginal bayonet, but a horrible knife.

Of the several examples I've handled and used, none would take much of an edge. It's also heavy, and clumsy. Great for digging or prying, just don't try to cut anything with it.

My .$02.

As much as I like the Killer looks and the sheath of the Nimravus, I am thinking that the Becker Tac Tool might be more practical in a SWAT callout. As M Calingo said, "The knife I carry would more likely be used as a tool more than a weapon." But of course, those "Warrior Fantasies" of mine, getting into some knife fight with some type of 6 inch sharp pointy blade is tempting me to get the Nimravus. But I guess I should think in a more practical sense. I appreciate all of the input and if anyone has anymore, please chime in.

Hey Dart...

I just recently did a job for an entire SWAT team in Missouri. They use the Buck Strider Solution in one of my sheaths in their Drop Leg Holsters..

You might consider the Becker Campanion if the Tac Tool seems too big. It's a little smaller but at least as tough and comes to a point if that seems important. A few years ago an EMT mentioned in Bladeforums that he had used it to cut through the roof of a car to free an accident victim.

I just got the Nimravus for christmas and can tell you its one hell of a knife. My second choice whould be a full size ka-bar with a kydex sheath such as the 1211 or 1212 (but you can get all of the with a kydex sheath) just because its very affordable, I know if I were to break it could easily replace it however, after a year of owning one and seriously using one I haven't replaced it.

BTW arent most kabar's full tang?

Ditto on the Buck Strider Soloution. Great feel and built like a tank and a good kydex sheath makes for a nice compact rig. The Ranger Knives RD6 in flat grind would also make for a great pry bar and if you contact Ranger Knives directly he can tweak one for you to your specs. Both are within the price range you mentioned. Good luck in your search and stay safe!

I too like the Benchmade Nimravus in M2. Light, full tang, and multiple carry options. Priced around $107.

I don't think most of the knives mentioned would stand up to prying, which was one of the original requirements. Both the Tac Tool and Campanion would.

Welcome!!

I have and will always recommend a Ka-Bar. I've been using the same one for years and have NOTHING bad to say about em. You might seriously condisder the smaller 5.5" ones.

Well, you could save some money and...start...collecting...knives!

Thanks for all of the advice and suggestions. They really help me and being someone new to "Good" knives, it is making me learn about knives more and more. I hate to think that I am getting addicted to knives but I seems to always be on the forums or asking questions or looking at them in the sporting goods section's of stores...oh well. :-)

welcome to the forums.I'll throw in the Ka-bar impact series of knives.Warthog, spear point and tanto.Small rugged and simple.Inexpensive too.

I'd suggest getting a knife that's really a knife (good for cutting and slicing, perhaps thin tip for penetration), and accompany them with a good SAK and perhaps prybaby (search somewhere on this forum)

Welcome to the party! It's always great to get some new opinions in the forum.

I would ask you coworkers what they carry and go with their recommendations. They live the life and know what works in your locale.
