I have been practicing hollow grinding on mild steel. The right handed side is coming, but the left hand is struggling. I saw, on another website, a tutorial on grinding. I noticed that the belt was tracked over so that about 1/4" of the contact wheel was showing. I have not been doing this, but rather have centered on the belt squarely on the wheel. I am wondering how others track the belt when hollow grinding.

Milt, I usually center the belt on the wheel during most of the grinding. However, when I come to dressing up the plunge lines, the belt usually gets drifted off about 1/8 to 1/4" on the side I am cutting.

Differences in grinding between left- and right-hand sides is extremely common. It isn't uncommon to hold the blade at a slightly different tilt or a slightly different grasp. Strive to keep the grip the same in both hands and the movement the same, and it will come. Practice, practice, practice.

What Fitz said... and do your weak side first. Then match it by doing your strong side second. After awhile, it won't matter as you'll have a solid feel on both sides. :)

When I started I only grinded on my strong side. Blade up on one side and blade down on the other side. After a few blades I had no problem doing both sides blade up.
