Hey guys.My name is Alex and im from Cyprus (a small island in the Meditteranean). This is my first knife out of 01 steel at 4mm.Overall length 24cms.Blade length 12cm.Oak handle. Not 100% finished yet (needs sharpening and i believe up to 600grit sanding) but thought i could show it in the forum. Its not comparable with the amazing things i have seen in here but im patient and not in a hurry to reach that level yet :)

Alex,

Excellent first knife, it demonstrates good design parameters; the handle is simple but well formed. Keep the first knife you make and look at it after you progress over a years time. It will make you smile.
I believe there is some talent lurking here, post the next one I would like to see where you go.

Regards, Fred

I shipped a Bubble Jig to Cyprus, was that you?

Thanks alot for the nice words...i appreciate it.whats a bubble jig lol?:)

Great first effort!
You mention "finishing" it, by sanding more. You won't want to do any sanding now that the handle is attached, it just won't work out. Looks to have a nice satin finish on it already though, so I would recommend leaving it.

This is your FIRST knife? Or this is your first knife out of 01 steel? Either way it looks very well made.

I gave it a try with 600 and 800 grid but i was extra careful with the handle.I used some tape on the face of it to avoid ruining it.Thanks though for the advise and comment

Welcome!
that is far better than my first knife (or my third). You are off to a great start. Keep posting and sharing. There are a lot of good people here, and they will steer you in the right direction. Just listen to what they say, and if it is obvious that you are listening and also trying to figure things out on your own, you will get a ton of help.

My main advice is two points, and they are general (not about the specific knife): 1. go to bladesmith gatherings and handle the knives and swords that others make. You can learn more in a weekend being taught at one of these than a year of working by yourself. 2. read and learn everything you can about heat treating. It is, other than design practice, the most important thing to learn. It may be the most important of all things to learn for a knife maker.

glad to meet you, so to speak. Looking forward to watching you develop. You have a talent, I think.

Hey Kevin
Thanks alot.About those gatherings thats a tad hard to accomplish as i dont know of anything similar happening in my part of the world. As far as the hard treating of steel thats my main issue and focus (and worry) since i started reading about knife making. Its one thing to make a knife looking as a knife and a total different thing to make a knife acting as a knife i think.Whatever little i learned is from the good old mr google and youtube and different knife making forums i joined. The search is still on :)

Nice knife!!!

If you fill out your forum profile information, we might be able to point you in the direction of events and gatherings. The knifemaking world is a small one, and there's folks scattered everywhere, and most are willing to help!

Hi Matthew

I will do the profile as soon as i get infront of my computer. With the phone i cant find it.Thank you

I thought instead of starting another thread and polluting the site to update my original one.Today i finished my 2nd knife out of a wood saw disk.2,5 mm thick with overall length at 23cm and blade lentgh at 11.It s supposed to be a skinner. One wrong move when i was sanding the handles broke the thin frontal edge of one and had to fix both of them while glued on the blade.Tried to be careful but blade was scratched anyhow.
