Newbie (knife designer..) here..introducing myself.

When you design your knives do you make any mock ups in cardstock, cardboard, or wood. I try to prototype anything I plan to make, which often leads to several design iterations before anything is finalized.

I guess I need to put up or shut up. Alrighty then, lemme get some scanning proggy installed (Just had my puter upgraded with win7 and now half of my stuff don't work on it. There's always something...)

By the way, that's just what I do (the drawings I mean) with the only exception that I don't really do the edge 'n stuff.

Thanks carrot.

There's a carrot in one of the other forums I hang out in. Wouldn't be you would it? :D

As for me making one, sure, I could make one but nothing that would look good which is what I want. A good looking knife.

If you look at some of the current work of a lot of makers versus their first knife you likely wouldn't believe the same person made both. Think of it like comparing handwriting of a first grader to an adult.... Well at least an adult with some degree of penmanship.

Knife makers aren't born, they're made. Through tons of hard work, heartache, blood, sweat, tears, frustration, anger, with some occasional joy and satisfaction mixed in (very little mind you, just for taste :D).

Yeah, not my thing, trust me... :)

Hey, I'm scanning some stuff now but I also thought I'd comment with the scans, kidna what my procedure was and all that. I assume you guys might find that semi interesting...?

Alright guys, here are a few of my designs and the reason I chose these were to show how I kinda did things. Mind you, not always but often this is how I did it and this is what the article I wrote was based on.

If I should happen to say this is how I DO things, I meant DID. Like I said, most or all of these are from 1993.

Anyway, as you can see, most of these have numbers and every unique knife would have a different number. 70, 71, etc.

IF, I use the same handle but change the blade, AND, I think they're too close to each other in the design, I'll still consider it the same number as in the first one. The design or knife number is 69 for the first two as they are too close but I changed it to 70 for the third one because it's considerably different I think.

Also, sorry about the shitty scans, I couldn't use my regular software so I was very limited and they WERE drawn in pencil and not charcoal either, just regular lead (refill) pencil. Ie, not very dark or thick lines.

Next, another two in number 69 and these may have been the first ones. Don't remember.

These obviously were considered different and got different numbers. As you can see, I did a handle I liked and just changed the blades. I'll do the other way around too and sometimes, I'll do a whole knife but very often, if I found something I like, I'd use it for other stuff as you will see further down.

Comments? Pros, cons, whatever

Thanks

A couple of comments. The purpose of the stuff in the back of the handle is of course to whack someone in the head if they come up from behind or whatever and it could be sharpened like a blade if one should want to.

The only two blades that appealed to me was the middle one on the first pic, and the first one on the second pic. I really liked the shape and flow of the blade, but that handle does not seem like it would be comfortable.

You are right, the handle needs to be more rounded I think but since I never did anything with them, I never bothered changing it but it would be fairly easy to redo.

I personally like the first one on the third page the best.

Anyway, I'll upload some more in a few days. Let's see what people say about these first.

Thanks

George

Those are pretty good.

See if you still got it. Do another without any recurves, holes in the blade, saw backs or spikes on the butt.

Good on you for puttin up :)

Hi george. Yeah the spikes on the back of the handle would rip up a users hands, and because no one has made a sawback knife that really works, they are seldom even made anymore. If you look at the history of a knife maker named Bill Moran, His knives have the same basic blades as yours. He was one of my teachers over 30 years ago and I just drew this freehand in about 10 seconds. You may want to try *sci/fi fantasy knives,* yours have that kind of style. Thats not a knock, it may be a calling.!!! enjoy edgy

I do have some fantasy knives too. Like I said, I was starting slow to see what comments I'd get and all that. Hell, I've had these since 93 so obviously I'm not that much in a hurry :)

Thanks for the comments by the way.

guiri, i do like ex. 71 (except with out the spikes on the end of the handle). nice blade shape and like the way the handle comes down to meet the blade.

Thanks, yeah, I think it's the best one too. As for the stuff on the back of the handle, when I drew them I just left them there but as with anything, if they don't work, they've gotta go :p
