Hey guys, looking for some help. I want to make a knife soon and was wondering where to get a beveling jig? I have limited tools right now. Here is a rundown on what I have right now.

A workbench 3 ft long up against a wall there are no corners to it, hard to explain but I only have the top surface and a flat face.

A drill press, very very old but work decent.

A vice that swivels, medium sized cheap quality about 4-5 in clamp space.

A bench grinder, It needs new wheels but I dont know which ones to get.

An angle grinder or disc grinder? Hand held makita with discs for cutting wheels or sandpaper.

A Lansky sharpening kit from very coarse to fine.

Safety equipment, gloves, glasses, clothing that cant get caught up or catch fire etc.

So down to business, I want to making a knife I can use in the kitchen, its going to be simple, stainless steel dont know which kind yet. I dont want it to be fancy but to work well and look clean, like a nice quality knife. I will send it off to be heat treated. What else should I get and where do you guys get your supplies from. I researched a lot on this website but there are so many different things to get it is just overwhelming.

Things I know I need.

Some files

Bevel jig, because i dont have a sanding machine I want to do it by hand.

Lots of sandpaper up to a very fine grit.

The steel.

Im probably forgetting a bunch of things so anything you guys can help me with will be appreciated and I will respond to the thread with anything else you need to know, Including pictures of my setup etc. Thanks!

Thank you both, I have already read both of those and many more probably one hundred times. The one thing I dont like is that when I do my filing I want my bevels to come out even, if i do it by hand it seems mediocre at best, it is tough to get the angle the same with every stroke. I cant find a bevel jig for a file anywhere online either??? also I cant find how to make the bevel grind radius, where the bevel starts to curve and drop by the ricasso, i dont know if I am explaining it right.

This is my setup:

That's a 2x3 pine board clamped to an L-bracket (?) with a hand bastard file zip-tied to a 1x1.

Here is a closup of the bracket

It is screwed into the board and there are holes drilled along the board to correspond with my most common bevel angles.

Here is my file guide:

Two pieces of hardened 1084 attached with two flat head bolts.

One is drilled with a #21 tap drill and tapped 10-32...

And the other is drilled with a #5 tap drill and countersunk.

Bolted together with 2 of these (there's only one in the photo though)

And I attach the knife like so:

Notice the chiseled out channel, this is important.

I hope this helped. Good luck in your knife making adventures.

Have another look, Taken from that link

You will have to make something, never seen one for sale

Hand Tools
You can do it all by hand with files and abrasive cloth like the Green Pete video.
Files can be made from unhardenable steel, or steel similar to 1095 that needs a difficult HT
Just use 1084 instead of a file.

I know a filing guide seems like it will do the job for you, but consider that while maybe thousands of knives have been made with a guide, many millions have been make by hand filing. It only takes a little time to get the hand movements down. All the jigs in the world won't teach you that. The biggest thing is a full straight stroke, lift the file and return to the top, stroke again - DON'T SAW BACK AND FORTH!

Thanks you guys very much, and I did see the link in the sticky but I thought that you could just buy them I didnt know they had to be made. Also after reading bladsmth post i will just do it by hand and learn

The one tool that helped me alot was a 4x36 belt grinder . They are about 100 bucks at sears. It will save you a BUNCH of time!!
